AT THE MOVIES (May 11, 2023)

Nancy's Notes đŸ–ŠïžđŸŽ¶

We’re going back in time, boys and girls, to a movie that was made 84 years ago. The year was 1939. World War II was just underway and a 17-year-old girl by the name of Judy Garland was singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. If there’s one movie that has withstood the test of time it’s “The Wizard of Oz”; it’s been one of my favorites since I was a child and I still watch it when it comes on. There are so many great songs from that movie but none can be compared to this one.

So, without further ado, here is the iconic Judy Garland singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

What a lovely, heartfelt and accomplished voice for a 17-year-old! That song never fails to bring on the tears.

In case you’re as verklempt as me, the question of the day will be an easy one. Here it is:

Who is Judy Garland’s equally talented, famous (and troubled) actress/singer/dancer daughter?

We already know the stars of “Easy Rider” were Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Who is the big name Hollywood star who had his first acting break appearing along Fonda and Hopper in the movie?

And the answer is 
. Jack Nicholson. How’d you do on that one? Well, if you were watching the “Easy Rider” movie clip, Jack was there front and center. Quite a few of you got that question right!

Well, since my name is Dorothy, one can certainly expect that I love the movie and music, have the entire reprinted set of the original books, own ruby slippers (two pairs) the more accurate silver slippers (one pair) and a whole lot of WofO dolls, including paper, and a whole set from McDonald’s dolls that my friend went every week for a happy meal until she had the full set. I have the Emerald City, bookends, and a life-size 50th anniversary cardboard Dorothy that I have tucked away, somewhere.
    Needless to say, I had to tell everyone enough is enough. The next twister, I wouldn’t be able to carry it all back to Oz!

  5. Oh, my gosh, Nancy. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have collectables on my bookshelves! I still watch and enjoy it when it’s on. When I was in school, I played the Wicked Witch in a school play. My kids used to make me do the cackle for their friends. (It totally freaked them out.) The video was a beautiful start to my morning. Thanks for sharing it.

      I adore this movie, too, and must admit I watch it whenever I know it’s on. We tried to introduce it to our 3-year-old granddaughter but she fell asleep before Dorothy landed in Munchkinland Next time we’ll start the movie there!

  9. You got the first like by someone whose gravatar picture is Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra…for such a classic it doesn’t get any better!

    Wizard of Oz…seen it but I must admit it didn’t have the impact, I have understood it had (and still has) on the collective american psyche.
    We are not in Kansas anymore…from a line in a movie to part of the idioms of a language.
    I did like Scarecrow…and (don’t tell him…he was so excited with his new brains…but he got the pythagorean theorem wrong!)

    Courtesy of my friend, a dancer and singer, sharing a cup of coffee and talking about TRS , she goes: “Liza, of course”…my reply “Liza who?” prompted a savage comeback ” Nick, you primitive hermit, I don’t understand why they recruited you “đŸ€Ł

    1. That’s my new friend, ‘Nostalgic Italian’; with names like ours, how could we not follow each other? đŸ€ŒđŸœ
      The W of O is a movie either people love or hate so I can dig the fact that you’re not into it. You can’t win them all! I think the songs are delightful.
      Anyway, I had to laugh at what your friend said about being a “primitive hermit” but I must argue the part about why we recruited you! As she said, and as A Gray answered correctly, the answer is Liza … as in Minelli. She appeals to and has a huge following among a definite group of people, much like Cher. MJ and Madonna.
      But … how did you like the song? đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïž

      1. My friend who offered the answer is a Flamenco dancer…and she is a pretty darn good oneđŸ”„đŸ’ƒ

        Oh, I like it…it’s a classic. And It is often I listen to that, as my wife teaches it to some of her students.
