In The Groove, Seventies

IN THE GROOVE (March 21, 2023)

How’s everybody doing? Hope you got your groove on for a little rock today because we’re featuring one of the biggest groups to come out of England – Queen!

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was first made for Queen’s 1975 album, “A Night At the Opera”. Written by Freddie Mercury, the song is the group’s greatest hit. It officially became the most streamed song in December 2018, having been downloaded or streamed almost 2 billion times.

Mercury’s premature death in 1991 shocked the music world but the band’s legacy is as strong today as it has ever been.

Let’s not get all bogged down with statistics and numbers; let’s just cut to the chase and play some Queen. Check your speakers and turn up the volume cos this is “Bohemian Rhapsody”!

It’s fair to say that actor Rami Malek absolutely nailed his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”; the Oscar he won for his role attests to that. But imagine if he hadn’t had the chance to play the part. Imagine if the producers had cast someone else. Here’s our question of the day:

Hollywood is calling you every day and producers are banging on your door. They want to make a movie about YOU and the story of your life! Cool, right? The pressure is really on now. If you were in charge of casting the movie of YOUR life, who would you choose to play YOU? I can’t wait to see these answers!

Well that does it for today’s edition of In The Groove. I hope you had a blast! Looking forward to Tuesday for another great song and video.

Have a terrific week and don’t forget to catch Deb’s post tomorrow here at The Rhythm Section.

See you on the flip side.

  1. And here is a different take on the original ( which I like a lot) . It was released as a soundtrack for the TV series Sons Of Anarchy, with The White Buffalo, The Forest Rangers, Billy Valentine and Franky Perez.

    1. Normally I do not like covers. There are very few Beatles covers which are any good but there are a few exceptions. I think Mr. B has been showing us some excellent covers in Breaktime Whodunnit.
This is a great cover! I know it from White Buffalo but I am one of the few people on the planet who has not watched SOA. Thanks for this, Nick! I’m going to see if I can find the live action video of BR.

  2. Hell yeah, Bohemian Rhapsody!!

Rami Malek was indeed phenomenal as Freddie.
In the movie there is a scene where EMI executive refuses to release the song as a single.
In reality, there were indeed voiced concerns about ” what the hell they were supposed to do with a six-minute single. Even bassist John Deacon expressed his fears, albeit in private, that to release ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ would prove the greatest error of judgment of Queen’s career.”*
Then Freddie sends the track to his friend, Kenny Everett, a British radio-DJ…
““It took the genius of Kenny Everett to hear and see ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as a classic single. Everett played a pivotal role in getting ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ released as a single and was famously first to air the track.
A demo was sent to him with strict instruction not to broadcast it, but simply to get back to Freddie with his opinion. Everett adored the track, and played it fourteen times over one weekend, claiming to his boss on every play that ‘his finger slipped.’”*

It was such a different, fresh, innovative song; needless to say that in the early years most people I knew were picking up the stylus to move it to the next track…but even them were caught by it’s spellbinding aura!

Now, to your question, Nancy…normally there is no way i would dive in such a question lol but Cosa sai fare?
For the curent me I would cast Jeff Bridges as he appears at The Old Man,
With one condition though… Dave and Carol have to be in the movie too.
(with all the bs happening around us Fuss is sooo useful 😉 )

See ya on the flip side.

    1. Now that was a comment!
I remember that scene from the movie but how cool is it to get all the real life background info you provided!
I’ve see a video which is Bohemian Rhapsody acted out. Have you see it? It is quite innovative. I shall see if I can find it.
Yes, Jeff Bridges would do a find job but can he do the accent? And what about Dave and Carol?

      1. No, I haven’t seen it.

I have no accent, lol…and Jeff can do anything he wants with it!
Dave & Carol are his two Rottweilers at the series. Fuss is the command to attack.

  3. Beatrix Potter. Writer; illustrator; gardener, and she was perfectly cranky, and everyone thought it was endearing. When I’m cranky, everyone thinks I’m cranky. As for his best song, I think my fav is Barcelona, a duet with Montserrat CaballĂ© and Freddie.
