In response to my friends at Fandangoâs One-Word Challenge,
todayâs word is âgambler.â

âSo, kid, your ma says you wanna work on my horse ranch. Is that right?â Micah asked Billy Bob.
âYes sir. I love everything âbout horses and I asked my ma if we can get one and she told me we couldnât afford one so the only way I can be around horses was to come work on your ranchâ Billy Bob answered, feet kicking up dust as he shuffled around nervously.
âWhat is it you love so much âbout horses, kid?â asked Micah.
âTheyâre the most beautiful animals I ever seen. I like the idea of taking a wild horse and workinâ with him every day, gettingâ him to trust youâ replied Billy Bob, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
âBreakinâ in a horse is one of hardest things I ever done, kid. Everything âbout being a horse rancher is hard. You ready for that?â Micah asked the kid.
âI reckon. All I know is I need to learn everything there is âbout horses, what makes âem tick, how to train âem to be the best horses ever. I canât think of anything more excitinâ ⊠except gettingâ rich, that is.â Billy Bob answered. He had a burning in him that Micah saw clearly now.
Micah removed his Stetson, pulled out a bandana from his back pocket and wiped his brow. “Well, kid. You sure got the desire, needinâ to know everything âbout horses. But you gotta understand one thing âbout workinâ on a horse ranch: it ainât gonna make you rich. Thatâs a real long shot!â Micah waited for Billy Bobâs reaction.
Billy Bob didnât hesitate. âThatâs ok, sir. Iâm smart; thatâs what everybody says anyway. Iâll learn right quick. Besides, I donât plan on workinâ on a horse ranch forever. No sir. Once I know everything there is to know âbout horses, Iâm gonna follow my dream.â
âAnd whatâs your dream, kidâ Micah asked, his curiosity aroused.
âIâm gonna be the smartest, most famous and richest gambler that ever wasâ Billy Bob replied with proud determination.
