Ovi Poem

The Struggle

Written for Ovi Poetry Challenge #68
where our inspiration word is “defeat”.
Here is my ovi.

There are times in life
Days full of stress and strife
Not just full but rife
And you’re ready to give up

Can’t tell friend from foe
A world teeming with woe
With no safe place to go
Living day-to-day is scary

People sleeping in the street
Begging for a bite to eat
No shelter from the searing heat
And no one lends a hand

The haves and the have nots
Big shots and little snots
Can’t connect the daily dots
The struggle is very real

Defeat may whisper in your ear
Enough’s enough, come here my dear”
Ignore the voice and don’t go near
Bend gently in the wind

Life can be a slippery slope
Don’t lose your faith or your hope
Hang on tight to that safety rope
You will rise above

Ovi Poem

Post Op: An Ovi Poem

Written for Ovi Poetry Challenge 65:
“Expectations” is our inspiration.

Author’s Note: As most of you know, I had back surgery on August 22.
Recuperation is much tougher than I thought or expected. I have no idea
if I’ll ever be the same. What I do know is I’m not as bad as I was
three weeks ago and in another three weeks I’ll be better than I am today.
Thanks, D, for helping me realize that.

One foot at a time
Try staying in a straight line
It’s ok, you’re doing fine
But everything really hurts

You need to take it slow
You have nowhere to go
Practice walking to and fro
One leg then the other

I didn’t expect this pain
Please let me go home again
And I’ll never complain
Just suck it up and walk

My hopes were to high
Like a big pie in the sky
Now I just want to cry
Grow up and stop the nonsense

You’re stronger than you think
Don’t make such a stink
Soon you’ll be in the pink
You got this, girl

Ovi Poem

I Hated That Job Anyway

Written for Ovi Poetry Challenge 60.
‘Haste’ is our inspiration. Here’s my Ovi
.

Haste makes waste, I’ve heard it said
Why get up? I’ll stay in bed
It’s August! The office is dead
Good day to sleep in

Push the snooze, catch more ZZ’s
How I wish I could make time freeze
Loll around doing as I please
I’m just so very tired

Phone is ringing off the hook
Guess I should go take a look
But instead I throw a book
My boss left a message

You forgot about the meeting
Future customer was seething
It’s too late now, he is leaving
You blew it, pal

Do not bother coming back
Forget your stuff; someone will pack
And one more thing, you’re fired Jack
Think I’ll catch forty winks

Ovi Poem

Dazed and Confused: An Ovi

Written for dVerse Poets’ theme:
Poetics: Dreaming up a Poem.
This is my Ovi based on a dream
.

My car after the accident

We were in the car
Hadn’t gone very far
Not a cloud the sky to mar
It was a glorious day

We went to the casino
Hoping to win lots of dough
Trying not our money to blow
The slots were on our side

The sun was bright in the sky
We were happy, spirits high
The road was clear, I could fly
Where should we go for lunch?

Suddenly a huge traffic jam
On my brakes I did slam
Fishtailing, I felt the ram
Some guy hit me really hard

No way could I stop it
Roll roll roll flip into a pit
All we could do was sit
Gravel poured through the cracked sunroof

Police and ambulance appear
Anyone in there? Can you hear?
I’m in shock, feel no fear
We’re rushed to the hospital

I’m ok but my husband’s hurt
There’s so much blood on his shirt
He’s dazed and confused, not alert
God, please let him be ok

Dream ends and I wake up
I reach for my water cup
Heart is racing, thump thump thump
This is a true story

This ovi poem is based on a horrible rollover accident from 2001 in which my husband and I were involved. The photo above is what was left of my car. I believe in God and I’m sure he was watching over us. It’s been 23 years but I still have dreams of that day.

Blue Rhapsody: An Ovi Poem

Written for Ronovan Writes Ovi Poetry Challenge #55
where ‘joy’ is our inspiration and for Moonwashed Weekly
Prompt
of ‘feathery blues’. This is my ovi poem.

Gardening is my source of joy
I talk to plants and they act coy
But then sprout like a teenage boy
They’re the center of attention

I have some lovely blue heather
Blossoms airy like a feather
Changeable as the weather
From baby blue to electric

My plants don’t ask much of me
Tender care I give willingly
And the best part is it’s free
Just a little of my time

I would like to be a plant
One to delight and enchant
Like a painting by Rembrandt
Sitting on a piano.

Have and Have Not: An Ovi SoC

Written for Ronovan Writes Ovi Poetry Challenge #53
where the inspiration is ‘motivation’ and for Stream of
Consciousness Saturday
where the inspiration is ‘water’.
Here is my Ovi Stream of Consciousness.

Backyard hose to gulp a quick drink
Babies getting washed in the sink
Garden sprinklers splash flowers pink
The things we do with water

Inner-city hydrants flushing
Fountains in the park are gushing
Free Kool-Aid gets the kids rushing
There’s nothing quite like aqua

Town pool for kids with no dough
Yachts in the ocean all for show
Haves and have nots, I just don’t know
Where’s the happy medium?

What’s your motivation, man?
Sell water in bottle or can
Not your style to give a damn
You just want to make a buck

All throats get parched and dry
Don’t let the little children cry
Paws on hot pavement start to fry
We need some heat relief

Water, water everywhere
Pour a glass and show you care
Help all living things and share
From sea to shining sea

Ovi Poem

Tick Tock Ticking: An Ovi

Ronovan Writes has offered up Ovi Poetry Challenge #52
where we are asked to write an ovi using the word
“tomorrow” as inspiration. Here is my ovi.

Songs say time keeps on slipping
Like brooks o’er shiny stones tripping
And kids their jumps ropes skipping
It just keeps moving on

It’s safe to say time flies
Like an eagle into the skies
So smoothly, he barely tries
I’d like to touch the clouds

No time to do that now
Worry lines crease the brow
Don’t fret about when and how
Nothing good will come from that

No sticking your head in the sand
It’s time to march with the band
And accept a helping hand
It will all get done

Why put it off till tomorrow
When time you cannot borrow
It flies faster than an arrow
Like quicksilver in your fingers

Don’t say there is no time
To make another rhyme
Or an old oak tree to climb
You have all the time there is

Look At Yourself: An Ovi

Ronovan has created for us the Ovi Poetry Challenge 51:
our inspiration is the word ‘steps’. Here is my ovi.

as seen at Poetics at dVerse

No time for speculation
Just truthful examination
To reach an evaluation
Which step I will take next

At times my body fails me
I’m an old and twisted tree
And my eyes can plainly see
Limitations in my way

Scans with the neurologist
Jabs from my orthopedist
Prescriptions at the pharmacist
One damn step at a time

When I look inside myself
I see I’m sitting on a shelf
I may need a little help
Sometimes the climb is steep

Keep up with the marching band
Reaching for an outstretched hand
To gently lift me when I land
Stumbling at the bottom step

Buon Appetito: An Ovi Feast

Ronovan offers the inspiration “food”
for Ovi Poetry Challenge #50.
Here’s my serving; pull up a chair.

Escarole and bean
Lentils red and green
Split pea and sardine
Traditional Sicilian soup

Feather light manicotti
Cushiony ravioli
Plump cavatelli
Pasta so delicious

Flaky sfogliatella
Creamy panna cotta
Sweet ricotta cassata
Decadent Italian desserts

Bubbly iced Moscato
Heady regal Borolo
Grapey Montepulciano
Intoxicating me

Ovi Poem

Get A Grip: An Ovi Peace Rap

Written for Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – ‘safety’
and Weekly Prompts Colour Challenge – ‘blue’. Here’s my piece.

What the hell, are you nuts
You trying to prove you got guts
Spare me the ifs, ands or buts
This is a big mistake, dude

Listen man, I’m doing fine
I’m in the zone, behind the line
My head is clear, my thoughts are mine
Just go somewhere and chill

You ain’t got a safety net
Is this some sort of crazy bet
You’re gonna kill yourself yet
You got a wife and kid at home

Blue skies, nothing is amiss
Clouds float by like lazy fish
Believe me, I have no death wish
I’ve never felt so free

You may think you got a grip
All it takes is one small slip
A twitchy little fingertip
You won’t survive the fall

This world is one insane rat race
We should respect our brother’s space
And live our days in peace and grace
It could be as simple as that
