Written for dVerse Pub Poetics:
Names of the Rose. Our host, Merril,
invites us to write a poem of any style,
incorporating the names of at least five
different roses. This is my haibun.

I met with him only once; it was a Tuesday afternoon delight that had no business being as perfect as it was. There he stood …. the Eiffel Tower …. that’s the first name that came into my mind. He was tall, yes, but it was more than that: he made you aware of everything around him, the whole sky, the fact that you were somewhere worth remembering. He brought wine and spoke about pleasure without apology, which I found both attractive and reckless, depending on the hour. I wore a yellow dress and he said I was like a summer song …. soft and winsome as sea foam. He called me Bright Eyes. It was easy being with him; he made every conversation feel like the beginning of something special. At night we went down to watch the boats in the harbor. The quiet evening ebb tide pulled back from shore, carrying whatever the day had left behind. We relaxed in the peace, both of us comfortable with the lulls between our words.
low cloud on the water
he says nothing, I say nothing
the moon does the work

Nancy’s Notes: The rose names I have chosen are Afternoon Delight, Eiffel Tower, Summer Song, Sea Foam, Bright Eyes, Ebb Tide, and Peace. Additionally, the title of my haibun, Moon Glow, is another rose name.
This is “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal
Everything on The Elephant’s Trunk was created by me, unless otherwise indicated. Thanks for your consideration. NAR©2017-present.

Years ago, I was so into roses and knew all the names. Now, all my rose bushes are named, “Isn’t it pretty.” 🙄🌹

😂 it’s incredible isn’t it? What do you have to do to get a rose named after you? On second thought, don’t answer that! Enjoy your pretty roses, my friend 🌹

It reminds me of the names given to nail polish; I would love to have a job like that! 💅🏼
