Where Does Love Go?

Written for dVerse Poetics – Where does love go?
Our host, Kim, invites us to write a poem, taking
the title from the question, “Where does love go?”
Here’s where the prompt took me .

You used to reach for me in the dark,
a reflex, like breathing.
Now your hands lie still as stones
at the bottom of a river.

I search your eyes for the old light ….
that flicker that once said you, always you ….
but find only distance,
a room I no longer have the key to.

We still share a table, a bed, a name,
the careful choreography of two people
pretending the music hasn’t stopped.
But I hear it …..

the silence
where your laughter used to live,
the space
between us wide as a frozen field.

I don’t know the moment it left.
Love doesn’t slam doors;
it simply walks out
while you’re looking the other way.

        1. My hand is in a big splint, which is keeping me from moving my fingers so they can be still and heal. I have less pain and presume everything is going well; the stitches will come out on Monday and we will have a better idea of how I am progressing. Thank you for asking, dear sis ❤️

  1. Perfect song pairing for your poem, Nancy. I loved your ending and relationships can quietly dissolve due to inattention, unreciprocated effort, or a lack of conscious maintenance, rather than just dramatic arguments. Love is a choice requiring active, daily engagement, not merely a lasting feeling.

      1. So true! We can fear saying something as we don’t want to hurt and yet we might as well just face it, because not communicating is the beginning of the end …. Voicing it gives understanding and forgiveness a chance …

    1. Thank you so much, my dear friend. If only! Don’t tell anyone, but my technical abilities are somewhat limited and I have no idea how to do that song app thing. I consider myself lucky to be able to create my images with the help of AI. Beyond that, I’m a fish out of water. 🩵 🎶

  2. It’s not over, my friend …

    Today

    Today,
the misty clouds are not moving,
and my world has stopped rotating.

    Today,
    time became becalmed
    in a blue lagoon
full of my memories and rhymes

    Today
I felt her angelic soul reminding me,
“Stay there for a while longer,
let me linger in your loving heartbeat.

  3. My goodness, Nancy, your poem resonates like an old song, especially ‘now your hands lie still as stones’ and ‘the space between us wide as a frozen field’. Yes, that’s so often the case that love ‘simply walks out while you’re looking the other way’.

    1. I’ll let you in on a little secret, Kim: it’s really a matter of listening to the fabulous song by The Righteous Brothers and translating it into my own language, my own thoughts. Your comments are so encouraging and I appreciate them greatly. Thank you so much! 💕
