Small Watchfulness

Written for dVerse Poets Quadrille Monday
“Bird is the Word”. Our host, De Jackson,
has offered up the word “bird”.
Here is my quadrille.

Barely heavier than a thought,
the chickadee lands on a branch
and considers the cold morning
with black-capped certainty.

It does not wonder about winter.
It simply tucks the seed away
somewhere it will remember,
or perhaps
somewhere it will not…
and flies off.

  1. What a beautiful way to describe a bird, Nancy, ‘barely heavier than a thought’!  I love the image of it considering ‘the cold morning with black-capped certainty’.

    1. Thank you for your very lovely comments, Kim. We are fortunate to have a great number of different birds visiting our backyard. I especially love the chickadees; they are an endless source of entertainment. I’m happy to know you enjoyed my poem. 🐦‍⬛

    1. We reached 65°F yesterday and the birds wasted no time picking away at the back lawn. I tossed out some pieces of nuts onto the patio and the chickadees flew right in. I love those little guys! Thanks so much for your beautiful comments. ❤️
