Her Greatest Gift

Written for David’s Weave Written Weekly
where O’Nika asks us to write an echo
poem* about a significant “first” in life.
Thanks for the prompt, O’Nika & David!

I have chosen to write about a first grandchild.

She held him first, that tiny soul, Whole
new worlds bloomed in her eyes, Skies
she’d never seen turned bright, Light
cascading, soft and warm, Storm
of feelings filled her chest, “Blessed”,
a word she breathed aloud, Cloud
of wonder wrapped around, Sound
of breathing, soft as early prayer, There
in her arms with tender care, Rare
this new love she’d never known, Grown
from her, this man so strong, Long
she’d watched him find his way, Today
he cradled his own son, One
tear starts to fall, then another. Mother
and son, their love poured free, Three
generations, one heartbeat, Greet
the circle, now come round. Bound
forever in love complete.

*Nancy’s Notes: In an echo poem, the last word or syllable of each line is echoed in a rhyming pattern. Additionally, the poems for this challenge must include at least one variation of the words “early”, “primary”, and/or “start’.

This is “Blessed” by Elton John

Everything on the elephant’s trunk was created by me, except where otherwise indicated. Thanks for your consideration. NAR©2017-present.

      1. I am so thrilled but so sad that I live 10 hours away! I wish she would come live with me. I suppose a lot of people live farther than that and don’t see their kids and grandkids as much as they would like to. I will learn to live with and be happy with what I am given.

  2. Nancy, your poem is so sweet and executed well too! I can only imagine having grandchildren is a blessing. The prompt was a first for me, in that I have never written an echo poem. I picked this style because it seemed not to have strict rules, so you can have room to play around with it and have some fun. Thank you for sharing your wonderful poem! 💛😊

    1. O’Nika, I have said many times …. as a mother, I never thought I could love anyone more than my babies, but then I had grandbabies. Seeing my adult children their own babies is indescribable. There is no other joy or love imaginable. ❤️

This was my first echo poem, also; in fact, until the other day, I had never heard of an echo poem, and I found it to be quite challenging. I’m very glad I stuck with it because the end result was extremely satisfying. Thank you for suggesting such an interesting challenge and for taking the time to stop by and comment on my poem. It’s gratifying to know my writing is appreciated. ☺️

  3. I am so intimidated by how well this is written. I tried this form two days in a row- and finally abandoned it. I remember the last time we did an echo I was very uncomfortable but pushed through it – but I think I will leave myself alone and let it pass me by this time.
This was such a beautiful expressive verse Nancy. I loved it.

    1. This is my first attempt at an echo. I was very confused and unsure what to do so I did some research and spoke to a friend who is familiar with this format. He gave me some good suggestions. After looking at a couple of examples of an echo poem online, I felt a little bit more comfortable about it. It took me several hours of writing, looking up rhyming words, and editing, but as far as I can tell, I did it right. I don’t blame you for feeling intimidated; it’s a tough challenge. You are an author whose work I admire greatly. I am deeply humbled and honored by your very generous comments; I know you really mean them. Thanks so much, my sister. ❤️
