Night Walk

Written for dVerse ~ Poets Pub: Open Link Night –
or – Painting With Your Words hosted by Lillian,
who has asked us to write a poem motivated by
the painting shown below. This is my response.

“Hushed and Still” by Simie Maryles

The street belongs to us tonight,
to boot and paw and breath made white,
while lamplight pools on sleeping snow
and houses amber-warm with glow.

No traffic, just our shadows long,
the muffled world our only song
two leashes taut, two noses raised,
a sky wind-torn, a moon half-hazed.

We’ll circle back to warmth and rest,
but winter dark has done its best
to make us grateful, slow, and still
for this cold street, this quiet thrill.

  1. A wonderful ekphrastic poem motivated by Simie’s painting. I know she’ll love it. I am especially smitten by these words:”but winter dark has done its bestto make us grateful, slow, and still”

  2. As my dad said (he was 90 and I was 65) with a wry cheeky smile, “You know Ivor, if you stick at it, you might make a good plumber one day” … I’m sure he was talking about my poetry writings, I’d already been a plumber for 40 years … and yes, your poems are the “makings of being a good poet one day”…
