The Night Shift

Written for Sunday Whirl Wordle . Our host is
Brenda Warren; her prompt words for this week are
shown below. Here’s where the prompts took me.

jaw, debris, stitch, slather, voices, beasts,
tides, salty, vault, edges, silver, and tilt

When silver moonlight hits the cathedral’s edges, the gargoyles stretch their stone jaws wide and yawn. Kradorr shakes off the day’s debris …. pigeon feathers, mostly …. and tilts his head toward the diminishing sound of voices rising from the street below.

“Another night guarding these beasts,” he mutters, eyeing the stone lions that never wake.

His mate, Jaavi, laughs as she slathers mortar between loose bricks. “Someone’s got to stitch this old place together, husband.”

They work until dawn, patching the vault‘s ceiling, clearing the gutters. The tides of time erode everything, salty sea air eating away at their home year after year.

As sunrise approaches, Kradorr and Jaavi settle back into position, mouths open in eternal snarls. The tourists will never know. They’ll snap their photos, comment on the “amazing craftsmanship,” completely unaware that the gargoyles themselves are the cathedral’s oldest, most dedicated maintenance crew.
