The Crossing

This is an interpretation of my dream.

I stand alone where the water ends,
toes pressed into the cooling sand.
The horizon stretches, endless blue,
and the sun climbs slowly into view –
a ball of fire, newborn and bright,
spilling gold across the morning light.

I watch, still. I do not move.
The waves reach toward me, then retreat,
as if the ocean wants to prove
it knows the rhythm of my heartbeat.

Then – sudden as a held breath breaking –
I am no longer on the shore.
The world has turned without my making
any choice, or taking any step before.

Now I float within the depths,
the salt sea holding me afloat.
I turn to see what I have left:
the beach, the sand, the distant coast.

And there – the sun is sinking low,
painting the sky in crimson flame.
What rose before me, hours ago,
now sets behind me, not the same.

The dream becomes clear at break of day:
I do not choose when I transform.
One moment I am the sun’s rising ray –
the next, I am the coming storm.

  10. An immersive poem, Nancy, which, as a swimmer, chimed with me. I enjoyed the rhymes, the images, and made me wonder why so many of us dream about floating. Could it be because our ancestors emerged from the sea? I love these lines especially:

     ‘The dream becomes clear at break of day:

    the next, I am the coming storm.’

    1. Thanks very much, Kim; I’m glad to know this resonated with you. For me, floating translates into resilience and the ability to keep my head above water when things get rough. This dream always comes just before a struggle. Even though I don’t always have control over these situations, I believe I will prevail.
