RDP Tuesday: peregrination

Written for RDP, where Martha asks us
to get creative with the word “peregrination”.
Thanks, Martha! Here’s one of my memories.

My husband and I are homebodies and like it that way. With the exception of a month in Sicily, visiting Disney World, and a cruise to the Bahamas when our sons were kids, we eschew traveling. We preferred spending our money and time on family summer vacations in our beloved Montauk, NY. As soon as our boys were too big for all of us to share one room at a motel on the beach (not the one pictured above), we starting renting a house …. one with 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, all the amenities of home, plus a large, in-ground swimming pool and access to the beach. We loved it there and have great memories of 35 wonderful summers in Montauk. We were so happy to have our sons, DILs and very young grandchildren pop in for a few days of fun in the sun. Then covid hit and the sleepy fishing village became a Mecca for the rich and bored yuppies from Manhattan who turned it into the new hip place to be on the East Coast. Sadly, Montauk became and remains cost-prohibitive. No, we’re old farts now and have no predilections for peregrinations. I’m content to travel vicariously through my globe-trotting WP friends via their gorgeous photos from the comfort of my recliner. Happy trails, tutti amici!

Nancy’s Notes: Back in the day before we had kids, we’d stop into the Memory Motel in Montauk, NY while there for a long weekend. It was not out of the question to see Mick and Keith at the bar or playing pool in the back room. It was a very different time back then; they’d freely walked around Montauk, going to the diner or John’s Drive In for ice cream without getting mobbed by fans or paparazzi. It was a great time to be alive and make memories.

    1. Very true, Liz. However, I don’t know anyone who is happy about the changes in Montauk. It’s a place that depends on summer vacationers and rentals. People who used to go can’t afford to go now. Stores and restaurants are not getting the enough customers and many places have changed hands over and over again before finally closing. Prices keep going up and no one can afford them.

    1. It broke our hearts, Lois. Our kids have such wonderful memories of Montauk and we hoped to keep the family tradition going as long as we could with our grands. We had a couple of good years with our first three but we never had the chance to bring our youngest one out there. Now we’re making all new memories! Thanks very much, my friend.
