RDP Sunday: plaid

Written for RDP, where drkottaway asks us
to get creative with the word “plaid”.
Thanks, Doc! Here’s my take.

When I was a kid, my parents didn’t want me going to public school so they enrolled me in a Lutheran school, which I went to for 12 years. There was no uniform in elementary school, but there was in high school. The girl’s uniform consisted of a navy blue and gray plaid skirt with a thin red vertical line, a red blazer with the school emblem and/or a red cardigan with blue trim. To finish the outfit off, we wore a white blouse and navy blue knee socks. That was my outfit every school day for four years. I loved wearing a uniform; everyone looked the same so there was no peer pressure and getting dressed in the morning was a breeze. We didn’t have to think about anything! The skirts, of course, were knee length and when you’re a teenage girl, knee length is like wearing a nun’s habit. We would roll our skirts up at the waist or we would hike them up and attach suspenders to keep the waistband in place just under our boobs. I’m sure we all thought we looked pretty cool when we probably just looked like jailbait! It may be a subconscious reflection on my high school days but since graduating all those years ago, there hasn’t been a single plaid garment in my wardrobe.

  1. This was so fun to read, Nancy. I was 12 years of Catholic school. Our grammar school uniform was navy blue jumpers with white blouse and white or navy knee socks. Our high school uniform was navy skirts with white blouse and navy blazers. And navy berets for church. 🙄😬Always rolling those skirts to shorten them. What a memory that is! And no. No navy blue in my wardrobe.

    1. Haha! I was hoping to hear from you, Lois! There’s little chance any of us will forget those school uniforms …. and don’t even get me started with the hideous onesie we wore for phys ed! A beret, eh? Ooh la la! And I totally get why you’re done with navy! Thanks for a great comment.
