to get creative with the word “plaid”.
Thanks, Doc! Here’s my take.

When I was a kid, my parents didn’t want me going to public school so they enrolled me in a Lutheran school, which I went to for 12 years. There was no uniform in elementary school, but there was in high school. The girl’s uniform consisted of a navy blue and gray plaid skirt with a thin red vertical line, a red blazer with the school emblem and/or a red cardigan with blue trim. To finish the outfit off, we wore a white blouse and navy blue knee socks. That was my outfit every school day for four years. I loved wearing a uniform; everyone looked the same so there was no peer pressure and getting dressed in the morning was a breeze. We didn’t have to think about anything! The skirts, of course, were knee length and when you’re a teenage girl, knee length is like wearing a nun’s habit. We would roll our skirts up at the waist or we would hike them up and attach suspenders to keep the waistband in place just under our boobs. I’m sure we all thought we looked pretty cool when we probably just looked like jailbait! It may be a subconscious reflection on my high school days but since graduating all those years ago, there hasn’t been a single plaid garment in my wardrobe.

I think uniforms are a good idea because they do level the playing field. There are lots of other ays to express oneself.

Absolutely! I loved wearing a uniform. I also wore a uniform for the airline school I went to after high school.

That must have been cool!

It was! However, when I got engaged, I couldn’t land a job as a stewardess because the airlines were only hiring single women back then. My flying days were over before they began! Good thing I had learned secretarial skills, too.

My sister almost became a stewardess, but decided to elope instead. Mom was not happy because she lost her deposit!

I think I would have prefered a uniform at my private school – that was instituted after I left. Mind you, we were restricted: no jeans, no t-shirts, no sweatshirts with anything on them (plain, OK), no running shoes.
It’s funny. I watched Odio Il Natale and I so loved the main character, Gianna’s, plaid skirts. now I want one 😉

With the money my parents saved by not having to buy school clothes, I was able to get some nice non-school clothes!
Bill drove 14 yr old Lucan to school one day last week and he was in his flannel pj pants, a Metallica sweatshirt, and boots! 😂
Girlfriend, go get yourself that plaid skirt!

Nice!
Bill was in his flannels or Lucan was? I swear, the kids these days, going to the stores in their PJs… they kill me!
I can’t find any!!!!

I would have been rather stunned had it been Bill…
And I really wish I could sew!

Just the other day I came across a photo of myself in a school uniform. I liked it, but I never rolled up my trousers!

The old roll up the skirt trick! Boy that brings back some memories! Fortunately, the year I hit junior high girls no longer had to wear skirts- so then it turned into wear a midriff under the shirt you mom thinks your wearing trick! hehehe

Yes! I looked totally different when I left the house than I did when I got off the bus at school. My girlfriends and I became experts at make-up and alterations while on a moving vehicle! 😂

I used to envy the kids whose schools required uniforms. I hated being made fun of because my clothes weren’t as cool as the cool kids’ clothes.

That’s a real problem, Blue, and kids can be so mean. Often the parents are no better. A friend was telling me the school her grandkids attend started a new dress code: the kids wear jeans and a school-supplied t-shirt with the school name and emblem printed on the front. It’s cheaper than a uniform but all the kids look the same. My friend said it’s a win-win for everyone.
Hope you’re doing well in the nation-wide storm!

This was so fun to read, Nancy. I was 12 years of Catholic school. Our grammar school uniform was navy blue jumpers with white blouse and white or navy knee socks. Our high school uniform was navy skirts with white blouse and navy blazers. And navy berets for church. 🙄😬Always rolling those skirts to shorten them. What a memory that is! And no. No navy blue in my wardrobe.

Haha! I was hoping to hear from you, Lois! There’s little chance any of us will forget those school uniforms …. and don’t even get me started with the hideous onesie we wore for phys ed! A beret, eh? Ooh la la! And I totally get why you’re done with navy! Thanks for a great comment.

This made me smile our uniform was grey and red and I too remember rolling up my skirt – what did we look like!😃

Haha! I knew this would spark a few memories. We probably didn’t look as cute as the girl in my image!
