In Cecily’s Garden

Written for Muse on Monday where David asks us
to write a story with characters of vastly different
sizes. This is where the prompt took me.

While weeding her vegetable garden one day, Cecily discovered a tiny village. The people looked just like her except they were no bigger than her thumb. The village was on the ground, nestled among the sturdy stems of the tomato plants. The little houses were intricately built with sticks, leaves and mud baked in the sun.

“Please don’t destroy our homes,” squeaked their leader, standing on a pebble. He was clearly frightened by the sudden appearance of a giant …. and who wouldn’t be?

Cecily knelt down, her shadow covering the entire tiny town. “I won’t, I promise. But, tell me …. why are you so small?” she asked.

“Why are you so big?” the leader quickly replied.

Cecily laughed. He had a point!

From that day on, Cecily and the tiny villagers helped each other. The little people ate the aphids on her tomato plants while Cecily tended her garden more carefully and protected the village from rain and various hungry garden critters.

Sometimes the best friendships bloom in the most unexpected places. We just need to be more accepting.

  1. Love it, Nancy. Now I’m imagining how the little people at the aphids, if they roasted them over the fire or baked them. Maybe they have a whole aphid cookbook. 🙂 Where my mind automatically goes. Thanks again for participating.

    1. Speaking on behalf of all those vertically challenged individuals, it can be a literal pain in the neck having to look up to see some people! It’s especially difficult as everyone in my immediate family, with the exception of Colette, is in the 5’8″-6’2″ range.
