A Few Of My Favorite Things

Written for Song Lyric Sunday
‘Ring On Her Nose’.
This is my response to the challenge.

Over at Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday this week, the theme is ‘Ring On Her Nose’ and our challenge is to write about a song that mentions jewelry …. like a watch, a ring or a necklace.

We all have our favorite groups; I have so many and I’m constantly adding to that list. However, there are three artists/groups I truly love and cannot imagine their music not being in my life. They will always be on my list of favorites, continuously in the top three. They are the sparklers on the top of my musical cake! As you may have already guessed, I am featuring a song from each of my three favorite groups. I chose not to include any stats or other information about the bands; I’ve written about them numerous times so any background info would just be redundant. If you crave data, it can be easily found online. That said, let’s get it on!

“Four Little Diamonds” is a song from Electric Light Orchestra’s 1983 album Secret Messages and tells the story of a man who has been deceived by a woman he trusted. The “four little diamonds” in the lyrics symbolize something precious that was stolen or lost, possibly literal diamonds, a diamond ring, or a metaphor for something valuable, such as love, trust, or a significant possession. The narrator expresses frustration and determination to recover what was taken, even hiring a private investigator to track down the woman who wronged him. The song explores themes of love, loss, betrayal, and the quest for justice or restitution. Like many of ELO’s songs, it combines storytelling with a catchy, upbeat melody, despite the darker themes in the lyrics.

Here’s a sweet little number by The Beatles which isn’t heard very often and that’s a shame. “Anna (Go With Him)” is a song written and originally performed by Arthur Alexander. His version was released as a single in 1962. A cover version was performed by The Beatles and included on their 1963 debut album, Please Please Me. A personal favorite of John Lennon, it became part of the the Beatles’ early repertoire. The lyrics are crystal clear.

Last but certainly not least, we have the Traveling Wilburys with “End Of The Line”. I love every one of these guys and wish they were still with us. Thankfully, we have their fabulous music to enjoy. For those who don’t recall, the Wilburys are the English/American supergroup of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison. The song’s lyrics, written primarily by George Harrison, are a positive and uplifting message about living life to the fullest, with references to happiness, making your own destiny, and being strong in the face of adversity.

  1. All great picks, Nancy. I only recognized “Anna” by The Beatles right away, based on the song title. I also did know the Traveling Wilburys song once I started listening to it.

I agree you rarely hear “Anna.” In fact, I don’t even recall having ever heard it on the radio! I know SiriusXM has a channel solely dedicated to The Beatles, so I imagine they may play it there every now then.

Speaking of songs on the radio, I also don’t recall having ever heard ELO’s “Four Little Diamonds.” The one track I remember from “Secret Messages” is “Rock ‘N’ Is King” – fun track as well, though I actually think I might prefer “Four Little Diamonds.”

    1. Thanks, Christian. I’m glad you enjoyed the music.

I have SiriusXM and have heard “Anna” many times on The Beatles Channel. Rarely will Sirius play anything by the Wilburys, which I cannot understand. I’ve also never heard “Four Little Diamonds” on the radio and only know it from “Secret Messages”. They don’t play much ELO either. This really annoys me. I wish someone could explain why a subscription-based satellite radio service plays the same songs over and over again and we rarely, if ever, hear anything new or different.

  2. That ELO song is a lost gem…you don’t hear that song as much. I had the album back then and I’ve always been a huge ELO fan. For a Beatles fan in the late seventies…they were as close to the Beatles as you could get. Of course I love the other two as well!

  3. A trifecta! But it’s the End of the Line capstone that fits the bill for me every time. One Song Lyric Sunday, many moons ago when I was locked in, I played the song over & over obsessively while walking laps around my “yard” and that’s an awesome memory to have on this very windy day.

  4. The ELO song was new to me, but I really enjoyed it. John Lennon was right to ask for the ring back if Anna was going to leave him for another man and he really sounds great singing that song. Any post that ends with the Traveling Wilburys End of the Line is a perfect post. Thanks for joining in again, Nancy.

    1. That’s a rockin’ little number, dear Ivor, but it doesn’t sound familiar. I remember the Easybeats had a big hit with “Friday On My Mind, another cool song. Thanks for your great comments and for the intro to “Wedding Ring”. It’s perfect for today’s challenge! 🥰 💍 🌏 🎶 💛

  5. When I got to the Traveling Wilbury’s I thought I was gonna be three for three of not knowing these songs since the name didn’t mean anything to me- but no- That one I knew.

    Great selections, all, Nancy.

  6. My band, which has been together for 19 years, played Anna and many other Beatles tunes. It was always a favorite with the crowd. Ray Stevens’ “Ahab The Arab” was also a hit, singing about Fatima, “She had rings on her fingers, bells on her toes, and a ring through her nose.” Used to crack me up.
