“Huh?” That’s what I was saying at my appointment with the hand doctor when I asked him if the lump on my wrist was a ganglion cyst. Again he said “No. It’s a lump filled with a thick gelatinous material that often appears near the tendon after a trauma”.
Here’s the description of a ganglion cyst I found online: A ganglion cyst is a benign, fluid-filled lump that contains a gelatinous, jelly-like material. Cysts typically form near joints or tendon sheaths, most commonly on the wrist. They are not tumors but are often associated with repetitive stress or injury to the joint.
Hmm ….. that sounds vaguely familiar. Oh, yeah! That’s exactly what the doctor said when explaining how my lump is NOT a ganglion cyst! I think it’s a matter of semantics with the doctor not willing to admit it really IS a ganglion cyst. It’s all very silly.
When Bill asked the doctor if he’s ever seen anything like this before, he immediately responded that he had, several times a month! Another “HUH?” If the doc is so familiar with these lumps, why not say so right away? Why all the different treatments and tests? The only explanation I have is he wanted to be as thorough as possible. I can’t fault him for that; however, it’s been a frustrating five months.
Ok …. here’s the bottom line: After trying many different approaches to make the lump go away or shrink, the only option now is a surgical procedure. I’m scheduled for two weeks from today on Wednesday, November 19; it’s an outpatient procedure so I’ll be home the same day. The contents of the lump will be biopsied to definitively rule out any possibility of rheumatoid arthritis.
I’m greatly relieved to be having this procedure and getting rid of Cyster, even though we’ve become quite attached. The pain and burning in my wrist is bad and gets a little worse every day as the lump continues to grow and my hand movement is restricted. Time usually flies except when we’re waiting!

Thanks, Debbie! It’s a strange situation all around but I’m trying to keep an open mind about the doctor. All I care about it that he does a good job and gets ride of Cyster. It’s time for the lump to go!

Jim, you can say that because you haven’t seen me being a cranky bitch about this whole situation! π It doesn’t do any good to sit around complaining about it; I’ll just feel miserable and make everyone around me feel miserable, too. It will be a very happy day when this thing is gone! Thanks for your good wishes, Jim, and Happy Birthday to your sister.

Best of luck to you, Nancy, and a speedy recovery, so you keep on typing. I, too, had a ganglion cyst, caused by stress trauma. I pressed it, massaged it, and wore a brace for a few months, and it went away. Sounds like yours is a pesky one.
