Written for Jim Adams’ Thursday Inspiration #299 –
“Dream A Little Dream Of Me”. Here’s my take.

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration prompt, Jim Adams asks us to respond to the challenge by using the prompt word ‘birds’, referring to the song “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” by Mama Cass or another one of her songs, or anything else we feel fits.
Yesterday was my husband’s birthday. Using Jim’s beautiful image of birds, I made a card for Bill and wrote a sonnet for his birthday. It’s called ”Love’s Refrain”.
Four little birds, in branches high,
Perched in a green and leafy tree,
Looked at each other, eye to eye,
And sang a song for you and me.
With feathers bright and voices clear,
They chirped a tune both soft and low,
A melody we hold so dear,
A gentle wish for dreams to grow.
“Dream a little dream of me”, they sing,
Each bird a note, love’s refrain,
A happy thought on joyful wing,
To ease the heart and soothe all pain.
Four tiny loves, in leafy tree,
Singing sweetly, “Dream of me”.

Recently on my site I featured the song “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I didn’t want to repeat that one so I looked for and found another version I think you’ll enjoy …. it’s the sweet voice of Doris Day featuring piano arrangement and accompaniment by Paul Weston and His Music From Hollywood.
Many thanks Jim Adams for this inspiration. Thanks to you all for stopping by for a look and a listen.
That’s all she wrote, kids. See you on the flip side. 😎

That is a lovely song version, and your birthday sonnet is beautiful. So very special. 💕🎶

Beautiful poem and I hope you spent a lovely birthday with your husband. I also have to say Doris Day did a nice job with her rendition of “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” a song I’ve always liked but only had known by The Mamas & The Papas.

Thanks, Christian. We had a very nice, relaxing day and Chinese takeout for dinner. No fuss, no muss!
Doris Day had such a sweet voice but this song also has some power to it; she did a great rendition.

Doris Day had a much more versatile voice than I remembered; I always knew she was very sweet-sounding but she’s also packing quite a bit of power in this one. I’m glad you enjoyed my poem; thanks very much for your good wishes.

Doris Day was always ‘the girl next door’ but she could deliver a song. I’m thinking Secret Love from Calamity Jane.

What lovely thing to do, Nancy, it’s a really lovely poem. I’m sure that reading it was the highlight of his day.
I might wtite myself one for my next birthday!

Thank you for your lovely comment, dear Keith. I’m not sure if my poem was the highlight of Bill’s birthday or if he enjoyed his Chinese takeout more. It’s a close call for sure! 😂

Bill is a lucky man, as nobody ever wrote a poem for me. You are both lucky to be sharing love’s refrain, this repetition of affection and deep feelings for each other. Beautiful poem, Nancy and thanks for joining in again.

Thank you, Jim. Bill and I are most fortunate to have each other. We’ve been together a long time and raised a wonderful family. It’s a good life. However, I don’t think you’re hanging around with the right women as someone should have written a poem for you! You are deserving and I’m going to remedy that oversight right now. Happy poem day, Jim. This is for you:
Take my friend, Jim, a man so sharp and keen,
With thoughts that sparkle, quick and bright and new.
The cleverest fellow you have ever seen,
His joyful wisdom always shines right through.
No puzzle stumps his mind for very long,
He’ll twist a phrase, a smile upon his face.
His witty answers never feel quite wrong,
And brighten up the dullest, dimmest place.
With witty jokes, he’ll make all people laugh,
A gentle spirit, kind in every way.
He’ll cut through problems like a clever staff,
And brighten up each ordinary day.
So raise a glass for Jim, so wise and grand,
The smartest, wittiest man in all the land.

It’s all a bit overwhelming at the moment, but hopefully things will settle down next month … I’ve just written this little poem
Who’s watching me?
From behind the trees
I feel ten thousand eyes
Staring at me edgewise
What do they know?
That I don’t know
Have they discovered my hideaway?
Are they for real, or just strays?
No matter either way
I’ll be here at the end of day …
… maybe I’ll post it tonight …
