It was Sarah and Jack’s 35th wedding anniversary and for the first time in all their years together, they were alone. The kids were all on their own, Sarah had retired from her job at the library and Jack had a month of vacations waiting to be enjoyed. They decided they were long overdue for their dream getaway ….  a carefree vacation to the picturesque countryside of Switzerland. They rented a charming chalet with a balcony that overlooked snow-capped mountains and a pristine lake. It was the perfect setting for a romantic holiday.

On their first night in Switzerland, after a delicious dinner under the stars, Sarah felt a wave of contentment wash over her as she gazed at the moonlit landscape. She turned to Jack, who was already setting up his easel and paints on the balcony.

“Come to bed, darling”, Sarah said, her voice filled with a mix of playfulness and longing.

“In a minute, my love. I just want to capture this stunning view”, Jack replied, completely engrossed in his painting.

“The view will still be there in the morning. Come to bed, darling.” Sarah laughed, turning down the bedcovers and patting the empty space beside her.

“In a minute, my love. It would be a pity to miss this perfect lighting” Jack explained sweetly.

Sarah chuckled, knowing Jack’s artistic passion all too well. She decided to give him a little more time to paint …. “but just a little” she thought as she picked up her book of poetry.

And so the clocked ticked softly in the quiet of the chalet as Sarah and Jack continued their lighthearted banter.

“Come to bed, darling.”

“In a minute, my love.”

Jack meticulously painted every detail of the breathtaking landscape as Sarah lay in bed, feeling a mix of amusement and impatience as she heard Jack humming softly on the balcony.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Jack put down his paintbrush and admired his finished masterpiece. With a satisfied smile, he turned to go inside, only to find Sarah fast asleep, her peaceful face illuminated by the soft moonlight filtering through the window.

Chuckling to himself, Jack gently kissed her forehead and whispered, “Sweet dreams, my love.” He slipped under the covers beside her, feeling grateful for the beauty of the moment and the love they shared. In the quiet of the alpine night, the couple drifted off to sleep, wrapped in the warmth of their love and the serenity of their dream vacation.

  1. This is so very lovely, Nancy.

I admit I kept waiting for one or the other to “fall into a permanent sleep” while waiting for the other.

Ridiculously relieved you did NOT go there!!

          1. I knew they were going to end the series with it when he had his first heart episode. I binged through that series like there was no tomorrow. Of course, I was doing my canning at the time so it was easy to go through 3-4-5 episodes in one “sitting, so to speak”. I loved it.

  2. A delightful story, and an equally delightful song, Nancy … I’ve only managed 4 blogs tonight, and it’s only 8.00 pm … but I’m tiring quickly, and I shall ‘slip under the covers’ very shortly … 😍😴

    1. Thank you, dear Ivor. I was very familiar with Mama Cass’ version of this song but it was nice to find a male & female duet to complement my story.
Don’t concern yourself with blogging, my friend. You’ll be back in the swing of things before too long. Have a lovely sleep.😴 🛌 💛
