Written for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt
#432 where we’re asked to be creative in exactly
85 words using the word ‘eavesdrop’. Also for
Sue & Gerry’s Weekly Prompts Colour Challenge –
‘lilac’. Here’s where the prompts took me.

“Did you eavesdrop, Benny? Is that what happened? You hit Lana, didn’t you?”
“It was an accident, Sherrif Mac! I swear. They was talkin’, Lana and Clarice. Talkin’ ‘bout paintin’ their nails. Lana, she said she wanted somethin’ classy and ladylike, somethin’ like a princess and that’s why she painted her nails lilac. And my heart went ‘BOOM!’, ya know? I ain’t never seen nothin’ so perty-soundin’ as lilac. I just wanted a look. But Lana, she said ‘no’. Why’d she hafta say ‘no’, Mac?

It was wrong to hit Lana, but Lana should have realised the poor boy had learning difficulties, she ought to have made an allowance for his childlike lack of social skills.
Nancy you conveyed so much in these few lines, and I thank you for sharing with the Lilac challenge.

Sue, thank you for your gracious and kind comments. The scenario you just described is what I was hoping to achieve in my short story, something I was afraid had missed its mark. I am pleased and appreciate to know that was not the case. It’s always a pleasure for me to participate in your various challenges. Thanks, once again.

This is sad, Nancy. We do feel for him. I think you still got the impact of it across.

That’s wonderful to know, Chrispina. Thank you! I was tempted to go back and edit the word ‘hit’ and change it to ‘kill’ but I decided that was being too anal on my part. I’m glad to know you felt the impact of my story.

Whoa! I’m sure that simpleton didn’t know his own strength 😢

No. I feel badly for him and Lana. This was intended to be a bleak flash about an unintentional killing, but I neglected to use the word “kill” and I’m afraid my desired impact was lost.
Thanks, Lisa

I understood that from what you wrote, and from the picture. It reminded me Of Mice and Men, the simple-minded man that killed a girl without having the intention of doing so.

That was exactly my inspiration, Lisa. Thanks for telling me that; I find talking about my writing helps me grow and become a better writer.

Every time I see the name Richard Marx, it makes me think that someone left the cake out in the rain.

Hmm, judging by your comment, I must have been too subtle with this one. I was trying to bring to life the accidental killing of a woman by a simple man who snapped, someone like Lennie from Mice & Men.

With that information- I can totally see it. I just didn’t go far enough and assume Lana was dead.

Makes sense; I didn’t disclose that. Drat!
