This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my September artist and his song.

New York-born Brian Hyland had his first hit song when he was 16 years old with the novelty number “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini”, which went to #1 in 1960. Some minor hits followed over the next few years until he hit it big again in 1962 with the teenage lament “Sealed With A Kiss”. A few years later Hyland had another respectable hit with “The Joker Went Wild”. In 1970 he and fellow rocker Del Shannon collaborated on Hyland’s remake of an old hit by The Impressions called “Gypsy Woman”; not only did it shoot up to #3 on the pop charts but got him some respectable critical reviews. His old hit “Sealed With A Kiss” was re-released in the UK and cracked the top ten.
In 1964, Hyland recorded a landmark album called “Country Meets Folk” in which he used electric guitars to back up such folk standards as “If I Had A Hammer”, “Don’t Think Twice” and “Folson Prison”; this happened two years before Bob Dylan shocked the folk world by ‘going electric’ at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. In addition to recording and personal appearances, Hyland has entered the field of TV production. He has been credited as coordinating producer for the highly acclaimed HBO documentaries “The Brooklyn Dodgers – Ghosts of Flatbush” (2007), “The Curse of the Bambino” (2003), and “Legendary (Boxing) Nights” (2003), as well as many others in the field of sports. Although his status as a teen idol has faded, Hyland continues to perform and tour internationally.
Brian Hyland’s 1962 hit “Sealed With A Kiss” was written by Gary Geld and Peter Udell; it tells the story of a summer parting, with the narrator promising daily letters sealed with a kiss and a pledge to reunite in September. The song, which was originally recorded by the Four Voices without success, became a major hit for Hyland, reaching the Top 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The song’s themes of youthful love and separation resonated with audiences, cementing its status as a classic love song. I was very young when this song was released but I can still remember feeling devastated for these two sweethearts who obviously loved each other very much but had to say goodbye for the summer. Hyland’s plaintive voice made the lover’s impending and inevitable separation sound unbearable.
This is “Sealed With A Kiss” by Brian Hyland
LYRICS
Though we’ve got to say goodbye for the summer
Darling, I promise you this
I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss
Yes, it’s gonna be a cold, lonely summer
But I’ll fill the emptiness
I’ll send you all my dreams every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss
I’ll see you in the sunlight
I’ll hear your voice everywhere
I’ll run to tenderly hold you
But, darlin’, you won’t be there
I don’t wanna say goodbye for the summer
Knowing the love we’ll miss
Oh, let us make a pledge to meet in September
And seal it with a kiss
Yes, it’s gonna be a cold, lonely summer
But I’ll fill the emptiness
I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss
Sealed with a kiss
Sealed with a kiss

Great song I didn’t seem to know based on the title or the artist, but when I started listening to the clip, I recognized “Sealed With a Kiss” right away. I think this would have been a perfect song for the Everly Brothers to perform. While according to SecondHandSongs.com it has an impressive 214 versions, including the first recording by The Four Voices, none of them was by the Everlys.

An opportunity missed? Perhaps. Still, even without this little gem I’d say the Everly boys had a slightly better career than Brian Hyland. 😂 But …. he’s still performing, bless his heart. Res ipsa loquitur.
Thanks, Christian.

Happy to share! Besides the bikini song (which I loathe), he didn’t have a slew of hits. I’m sure he’s asked to sing both songs wherever he’s performing. Thanks!

We had the same thoughts, Jim. I kept checking Reader, but nothing. The last post was Aug 26 and I don’t recall seeing any comments from him. Let me know if you hear anything; I’ll do the same.
