Written for Esther’s Writing Prompts #80
incorporating the word “strike”, and for the
image from Mark @ Today’s Writing Practice.
Here’s where the prompts led me.

The sky grew dark, a heavy gray,
The sun itself had run away.
A distant rumble, low and deep,
Woke the quiet world from sleep.
Then FLASH! A silver, winding line,
A strike so quick, a sudden sign.
Then BOOM! A mighty, rolling sound
That shook the trees and moved the ground
The rain came down, a pouring sheet,
Washing clean the dusty street.
Then quiet calmed, the storm went by,
A fresh, clean scent beneath the sky.

Thanks! This was originally written only for Esther’s prompt using my graphic, but when I saw Mark had a similar theme going with his image, I decided to combine them. Two for the price of one!

Thanks so much, Jim. Some thunder boomers can really get people running for cover! I’m happy to know you liked my little poem.

The part of Florida where I live, there are thunder boomers just about every day throughout the whole summer. The cats are always frightened of them, but I am used to them occurring and the odd thig is that an hour later, everything outside has dried up already.

Yes, I remember Florida being like that when we visited a few times with our kids. One of the things I loved the most about vacationing in Montauk was being right on the ocean and seeing the most impressive lightning strikes. Nothing can compare to the open sky, crystal clear and free from pollution. Just like in the images shown above, the lightning went straight into the ocean … or so it seemed. It was quite a light show.

I used to live on Long Island when I was young, but I have never been out to Montauk, and I bet it is beautiful out there.

It really is, Jim. We started going out there when our boys were toddlers, and it became our summer go-to place. It was quiet and family-oriented and we spent 35 happy summers there. Things changed during Covid and we have not been out there since then. I understand it is now too expensive for everyone except the elite and super rich. That’s too bad.

Thanks, dear Penn. I love your little play on words … very fitting. After so many days of heat and dry weather, we need the rain desperately. Sing your rain song, Penn! 🌧️ 🌩️
