Feb Fab Faux Four In August: A Thursday Inspiration

Written for Thursday Inspiration #292 –
“O-o-h Child
. Here’s how I was inspired.

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration prompt, Jim Adams asks us to respond to the challenge by using the prompt word ‘brighter’, referring to the song “O-o-h Child” by The Five Stairsteps or another one of their songs, or by anything else we feel fits. Jim’s prompt took me to back to where I’m most happy.

Many of you know that I’m a huge fan of the Beatles. When I read Jim’s post today, I learned that The Five Stairsteps did a cover of “Dear Prudence” … one of the most beautiful songs by the Beatles.

If you followed me in the past, you may remember my blog called Feb Fab Faux Four where, for the entire month of February, I played a Beatles’ original song followed by a cover version and asked my readers to choose their favorites. I was reminded how much I enjoyed that blog and the great comments from my readers.

My response to Jim’s Thursday Inspiration is to play the Beatles’ version of “Dear Prudence” followed by the cover version by The Five Stairsteps. If you’d like to participate, please listen to both and let me know in the comments which one you liked the best.

And here we go!

This is “Dear Prudence “ by the Beatles

This is “Dear Prudence” by The Five Stairsteps

So now that you’ve heard them both, which do you prefer?

Many thanks Jim Adams for this inspiration. Thanks to you all for stopping by for a look and a listen.

That’s all she wrote, kids. See you on the flip side. 😎

    1. Thanks, Christian. One day I heard Eddie Vedder talking on SiriusXM about “Dear Prudence”. The way he broke down the song was incredible; everyone talks about the lyrics but no one had ever explained the music the way Eddie Vedder did. When he said the best way to listen to “Dear Prudence” was through headphones, I slipped mine on and awaited the religious experience I was sure would come. And it did. It was a musical mind explosion! The beauty of this song through headphones is the stuff that brings you to tears. If you haven’t listened with headphones, please do. It’s life-changing.

Please come back and let me know what it was like after you listened with headphones.

      1. Thanks! I previously listened to “Dear Prudence” via headphones, but it had been a long time, so I just did it again. 🙂

You’re right, using headphones is the only way to get the full experience. There’s quite a bit going on in the song musically, some of which you might not fully recognize unless you listen with headphones.

One of the standouts to me is Paul’s bassline. Yes, you can hear it without headphones, but with headphones it sounds so much better!

Ideally, one should always use headphones when listening to music. Granted, in some cases it’s more worthwhile than in others.

I’m a key offender when it comes to this. Oftentimes, I listen via my computer loudspeaker or even worse the smartphone speaker, which I guess you could say isn’t very smart!

        Thanks again! 🙂

        1. My favorite experience while listening to “Dear Prudence” through headphones is hearing how John, Paul and George are each playing totally independent melodies which magically blend together as one. It’s a brilliant song.

So glad you got to listen, Christian. It’s an adventure worth sharing.

  1. Prudence Farrow, sister of actress Mia Farrow became extremely dedicated to meditation and this intense focus on meditation caused her to isolate herself and miss out on life. I think it is nice to hear a different version of this song, but not many people can improve on the Beatles.

  2. Hi Nancy my dear …I love Dear Prudence and even though The Five Stairsteps ( what a great name) did a really good version it’s too sticato and stilleto for me…. The Beatles drift aimlessly through …. Beatles for me 💜💜💜
