Dear August

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured August artists and their song.

People Don’t Change is a collaborative EP by Australian singer-songwriter PJ Harding and American singer Noah Cyrus, younger sister of Miley Cyrus. Harding and Cyrus originally met at a songwriting camp in Bali, and eventually teamed up in 2019 to write songs for Cyrus’s second EP. My song choice today is “Dear August” a track from People Don’t Change.

“Dear August” was written as a hopeful love letter to the future during a dark and uncertain time. Written during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, “Dear August” explores themes of hope, loneliness, and the search for light during a difficult period. Noah Cyrus, in particular, was experiencing anxiety and depression during this time; the song served as a way to process those feelings and look toward a better future. The lyrics convey a sense of searching for hope and transforming challenging experiences into something positive.

LYRICS

Mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm, mm, mm

Slowly, why’s the morning come so slowly
When I got no one to hold me through the dark?
Patient, they tell me that love is patient
But it never wants to wait on my drunk heart

So I’ll take all of my, all of my, all of my wasted love
And turn it into wine, into wine, into wine in my cup, whoa

Dear August, tell me that there’s light
At the end of all this starless night
Dear August, please don’t let me fall
‘Cause I don’t know where this road is headed anymore

Fading, now the summer heat is fading
I spend every evening praying for the dawn
Save me, looking for someone to save me
Give me everything you gave me, but you’re scorned

So I’ll take all of my, all of my, all of my wasted love
And turn it into wine, into wine, into wine in my cup, woah

Dear August, tell me that there’s light
At the end of all this starless night (oh)
Dear August, please don’t let me fall
‘Cause I don’t know where this road is headed anymore, oh

Oh, dear August (ooh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, August
Oh, no, no, no, dear August (ooh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, August
Ah, ah, ah

Dear August, tell me that there’s light
At the end of all this starless night
Dear August, please don’t let me fall
‘Cause I don’t know where this road is headed anymore

  1. This is a lovely song choice, with a very interesting accompanying write up, Nancy … meanwhile, down here Aussieland, I’ve twisted the ‘August’ prompt to suit myself … here’s a fascinating music/video by, “Augie” March … film at ‘Avalon Beach’, a little township on Corio Bay, just 20 minutes away from my place.

    1. Thank you, dear Ivor. I’m pleased to know you enjoyed my August song. 🎶♡

This one by Augie March certainly was uniquely fascinating! I love the name ‘Avalon Beach’; you’re very fortunate to live near such a quaint and lovely place. 🌏💙

  2. An absolutely beautiful song, by far and away the most talented member of her family. And their song for July is even better! Count me a fan 👍

I played this as the theme for one of my monthly review posts – four years ago, doesn’t time fly!

      1. I think she’s brilliant. I recently played a track from her new album, just as good as this. A real talent, and when I saw your title I thought ‘please let it be this!’
