So this just happened. There are mixed reports of a second quake immediately after in NYC. This was at 10:18PM and Bill & I both said “What was that?” It was extremely disconcerting. It didn’t feel like the 4.8 quake we had on April 5, 2024; there was no question that day what was happening. This felt like leaning against the washing machine for about 5 seconds during the spin cycle … without the noise. The quiet definitely added to the strangeness.

Just in time for my son’s arrival in NY. Glad you were ok. We’re overdue here!

Wow! I didn’t know earthquakes happened up your way. It is a strange feeling for sure, to suddenly be sitting there and everything is shaking. We get them here every once in awhile, usually in the 5.4 magnitude. And we got used to them in Japan. I’m glad yours wasn’t too damaging. π

Thanks, Barbara. No damage at all; we were just a bit startled by it. Other than the one in April 2024, this is the only other quake in the area that I’m aware of.

I live in a state that has multiple quakes every day- of course it is a very big state so we certainly don’r feel them all where I live. We’ve had a couple of doosies though. As long as it stops- I am a-ok with having them, but there is always the what is that factor- even when you are used to them.

I’ve read that about Alaska. I doubt I’d ever get used to it. π¬

I’m sure you guys are not used to them like we are, who knows what Mother Earth will come up with next! π

No, we are not and I’d like to keep it that way! π

Ooh-err, I wouldn’t have liked that. The only time my apartment shakes is when a heavy truck passes by.

We didn’t like it one bit! I don’t think I’d be brave at all in a real earthquake.

Gosh, you wouldn’t expect one of those where you live. Hmm… wonder why? Still, glad you are all right!

In 1991, one of our well-known TV news anchors wrote a book called Aftershock. It’s all about how New York being hit by a major earthquake. That book scared the crap out of me …. even though it’s a novel, the author did extensive research and believes NY will definitely get hit badly. When? Who knows? But a 4.8 quake last April and now this and my antennae’s up.

We had a 6.4 in Bogota a couple of months back which sent us scooting for the exit.
To be honest I prefer the fire hazards we had in Australia over the earthquake threat we have on the ring of fire belt.

Yeah, no! I hope the 4.8 last year is the biggest quake I ever experience.

Glad you are safe and well. Scary times!
And how often do you lean against the washing machine? I think we should be told π€£

It was surreal and disturbing but we’re ok and no damage.
How often do Iean against the washing machine? Not as much as I’d like. π

Hope that you are all safe now… We experienced two small earthquakes earlier this year while we were in Turkey… We were in an hotel lobby made of glass and the noise was scary as was the shaking glass !
Another sign our planet is rebelling! πππ

That sounds terrifying, Willow; I remember when that happened while you were away. Perfect timing!
You’re right about the planet rebelling.

3.0, ha! That around these parts in Northern California is like a big sneeze. Hey, just kidding. We had a 3.5 quake a few weeks ago. My wife and I were watching TV and she, our dog, and I suddenly all sat up. My wife said, βWas that aβ¦.? And I said, βYeah, a small earthquake.β
I hope there wasn’t any damage.

Oh, I’m sure that must have sounded pathetic on my part. We’re New Yorkers, born and bred. We don’t know from earthquakes! Scary planetary stuff going on, Fan.

Nancy, with all that is going on in New York, it’s not surprising that an earthquake would visit. I was living in Fresno in the early 90s when that butt rattling one hit LA. It shook me out of bed. Earthquakes are God’s way of telling us to pay attention. I love the Carole King song, one of my favorites. Wonder how old that cat is now?

Too funny! First thing I noticed about that album cover was the cat! Our Lucy looks just like that one.
That little knock on our front door last night sure got our attention. I would be a basket case in a major earthquake so fingers crossed it doesn’t happen.

How strange! We don’t have earthquakes in Australia, and yet there was a 5.6 earthquake in Newcastle Australia in 1989 that devastated buildings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Newcastle_earthquake
Unlike New Zealand, nothing is built to withstand earthquakes here.
I do remember being in Wellington NZ (where every building is earthquake proof) inside a shopping mall and being told afterwards there was a 6 point earthquake that morning while I got my hair done at the hair salon and I didn’t feel a thing.
Despite all of this, the feeling of leaning against a spin dryer under your feet and not knowing what it is – would be most disquieting! Hope all is okay?

This is New York. We shouldn’t get earthquakes here but….
Thank you, yes. All is well.

When I lived in California, I slept through an earthquake. Not a major one, obviously. Since they happen all the time out there. Glad youβre safe!

You must be a sound sleeper!
This was more of a vibration than a quaking. At first I thought in was my recliner but then I realized Bill felt it, too. It was weird and like everything we can’t control, it was frightening. Thanks, Melissa. We’re good!

Hope y’all are okay, Nancy! Lots of earthquake action lately!

We’re fine, Kevin, thanks. Back in our recliners like nothing happened. I don’t know how people who live in quake-prone areas handle the big ones! Nice of you to ask, considering all you’re going through today. Feel better, man!
