June – Week Two

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured June artists and their song

It’s the 2nd week of June, the sun-kissed  days of summer in the Northern Hemisphere are just about here and the first half of 2025 is almost over!

I did quite a bit of research for today’s song and didn’t have much luck gathering information. And if that’s not bad enough, it was even more difficult learning anything about the woman who wrote the song! If you’re unfamiliar with this song, then I consider myself in good company as it was unfamiliar to me as well.

My featured song this week is called “June Is As Cold As December”. According to what I found online, a songwriter named Marge Barton wrote the song which was first recorded by Gene Pitney in 1965 and is on his album, Being There. The following year the song was recorded by the Everly Brothers for their album In Our Image.

Even though “June Is As Cold As December” didn’t quite have the success as the hits from the earlier careers of both Gene Pitney and the Everly Brothers, songs like this absolutely prove that wasn’t due to a lack of talent or an inability to change with the times. The Everly Brothers and Gene Pitney were a huge presence during the first wave of pop and rock & roll; this song proves they were more than capable of holding their own against their peers in the mid-60s.

I have both versions of the song for you today. Let’s start with the original; from 1965, this is “June Is As Cold As December” by Gene Pitney.

LYRICS

Here comes June
A vision of loveliness
When she smiles
It’s like a sweet caress
Every boy she meets
She sets his heart aglow
They think she’s the answer to their dreams
But they don’t know

June is as cold as December
June has a heartache she remembers
The pain of one untrue love
Left her afraid of new love
June is as cold as December

Here comes June
The prettiest girl in town
When she’s near
The boys all gather ‘round
Hoping to be, the one
Her heart is searching for
But June doesn’t have a Heart to
Offer anymore

June is as cold as December
June has a heartache she remembers
The pain of one untrue love
Left her afraid of new love
June is as cold as December
June is as cold as December

Songwriter: Marge Barton

And from 1966, this is “June Is As Cold As December” by the Everly Brothers (the lyrics are the same)

Did you like “June Is As Cold As December“? Which version did you prefer?

  1. I have never heard of Gene Pitney, never mind this song!

Talk about two totally different vibes! If I’m feeling country, I’ll take Gene, if I’m feeling that 60’s vibe, I’ll go with the Brothers

    Thanks for the intro 🙂

      1. Up and at ’em early, Ms Nancy!! He has that type of singing voice that could belong to a number of singers. I feel I’ve heard it before but… Mon plaisir ma chère amie!

              1. Not here. And my pool still lies empty. The liner ripped out and me (im)patiently waiting for the new one to be installed. The company that makes them cannot keep up. And this, despite my starting the process in early May… Sigh.
