Success has been a slow but steady climb for the Grammy-winning San Francisco rock group Train. It took more than two years for momentum to build behind the group’s self-titled debut and its first single but the story surrounding the group’s second LP, “Drops of Jupiter”, is much different. When the premiere single … the title track … began radio play in the spring of 2001, it instantly garnered attention from music fans. The notoriety catapulted the album to #6 on the Billboard 200 chart within the first week of its release. 

Lead singer Pat Monahan’s composition pristinely captured the gutting feeling of one left behind by an ex who’s off to find themselves. However, most listeners didn’t understand that the inspiration for the song was far different. Nor did they know that Train got to the precipice of their big break thanks to a dream.

Monahan explains that his mother had recently passed away after battling cancer. One afternoon he was taking a nap and woke up about 10 minutes later with the entire song … lyrics and melody … in his head. He went downstairs for his acoustic guitar and wrote the whole thing in 15 minutes; the next day, he demoed it.

“Drops of Jupiter” peaked at #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in June 2001. On the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, the song ascended to the top 10 during its 49th week, marking the longest climb to the top 10 on that tally by any act, where it stayed for 54 weeks. The song has sold and streamed over 9,000,000 units since its digital release in 2003, earning a nine-times platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

  2. I’ve always loved “Drops of Jupiter.” In fact, that song also made me buy Train’s album of the same name on CD at the time it came out. I haven’t listened to the album in ages, but “Drops of Jupiter” obviously stuck in my brain – quite a catchy power ballad!

  4. I LOVE this song. It reminds me of oh my… 23 years ago when I used to do a spinning class and this was one of the tunes the instructor tormented us with! Wonderful memories.

      1. I know, right? I have songs that go with so many different memories or people. What would we do without music? And hah! Right. All in the name of looking fab. And for what? I look at myself now and think… well that sure as shit did not work!

    1. OMGosh, Penn! There are so many songs I can’t believe I don’t know. I am completely out of touch with today’s music; it holds no appeal for me. Occasionally I’ll hear a new song that I like but most of it is rubbish! My friend Ivor in Australia introduces me to a lot of music I’ve never heard before; it’s mostly older Australian music and it’s wonderful! I don’t know how he does it some times. I’m very glad you liked the music of Train; it’s my great pleasure to introduce you. ♡🎶♡
