This week we’re going to take a look at Weird Al’s 1988 “Polka Party!” featuring a medley of such songs as “Sledgehammer”, “Say You, Say Me”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, and others. Al is well-known for his polka medleys and has included them on 12 of his 14 albums. He also performs a polka medley at all his live shows. “Polka Party!” is the third polka medley recorded by Al and is from his fourth album, Polka Party! Peaking at #177 on the Billboard 200, Polka Party! was met with mixed reviews and was considered a commercial and critical failure. Despite this, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. Polka Party! is one of Als few studio albums not to be certified either Gold or Platinum by the RIAA. Boy, what a bunch of Derogatory Debby Downers! Well, that’s ok; it’s my blog and I’m featuring it anyway! 😝

  4. In Band class we had twelve officers. Every year on the last day of band camp the officers did some sort of skit. I was a senior and band president at the time and had a hand in picking what we were going to do. We decided to pick a few songs that would feature each of the officers lip synching. We did about 30 seconds of each song before segueing into the next one. As our finale, we used Polka Party because the medley has 12 songs – one for each of us. We all lined up in single file and there was a single spotlight that shown on the officer lip synching. As each new song of the medley began, the next officer would push the previous one out of the spotlight. On the final “Keep my baby, Keep my baby” the entire stage lit up and we all sang that part together. It is one of my favorite band stories!

  11. This medley was really well-executed, and it makes perfect sense for Al to recapture his polka roots. (From a woman who spent far too much time folk dancing in her youth, still scarred by Lawrence Welk trauma!)

  13. Love it!
    Whenever I hear polka music, I have this memory of being at a family wedding and absolutely no one was dancing. They played a polka, my mother grabbed me, and we polkaed around the dance floor laughing hysterically. Pretty soon, the dance floor was filled.
