‘Lonely People.’ Here’s my spin on things.
The other day in Thursday Inspiration, Jim Adams asked us to respond to his theme “Lonely People” by using the prompt word cup, or going with the above picture, or the song “Lonely People” by America, or with another song by America, or anything else we thought fit.
Well, I think this fits and it’s kind of funny how things happen, you know?
During a phone conversation with my sister last week, we somehow got on the subject of our weddings; she and her husband were married in 1968 and Bill and I tied the knot in 1972. My sister was quite surprised that I remembered the name of the song she and husband chose for their first dance as a married couple. It was a ballad called “My Cup Runneth Over” sung by Ed Ames and was strangely out of place on the pop charts when it was released in early 1967. Still, it found its niche and the song went all the way to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for two Grammy Awards …. for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
“My Cup Runneth Over” was written by the songwriting team of Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones for the musical “I Do! I Do!” …. a two-character play about the life of a married couple from newlyweds to empty nesters, starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston; he won the Tony Award for his performance. The play was also nominated for Best Musical, Best Lyricist and Composer, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.
I’m sure you’ll agree with me that it’s a very small world and quite serendipitous that Jim chose an image with the words “My cup runneth over”!

After my mother have her child with my stepfather, he gave her a large charm that said on one side “Thank You, Diamonds (his nickname for her)” and “My cup runneth over” on the other. I didn’t know he had it in him.

I’m trying to remember what my ex-wife and I danced to when we had our second go at being married! Here We Go Again would have been a good choice. Come to think of it, we could have also used it when we divorced for the second time!

The Broadway show version of “My Cup Runneth Over” is quite beautiful actually (same creators as the classic musical The Fantasticks). Ed Ames sang his admittedly corny version and hosted an ABC special my band appeared on. Out co-host Aretha Franklin was a lot hipper!

I so agree, so often I find prompts fit with some thought or happening in life. I have trouble getting the music to play from posts and ask my Alexa to play them… after I had listened to yours the next song that Alexa played was Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the roof, mentions seasons following another … which was pretty much Di’s prompt this week,.. strange .. ! 💞
