Hey! Welcome back to Weird Al Wednesday
featuring the comedic genius of Al Yankovic.
“Say, Al! Did you know Mark Knopfler of Dire
Straits is a big fan of yours? How about that!”

Today’s video originally appeared as one of Al’s dream sequences in the movie UHF. Al parodies the Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing” video with pinpoint accuracy, down to the cheesy but still kind of awesome animation effects and swapping in the Beverly Hillbillies. When Al requested permission to parody “Money for Nothing“, he was given the ok with the stipulation that Mark Knopfler (lead guitarist, singer and songwriter for Dire Straits and a huge fan of Weird Al) be allowed to play lead guitar on the song. The parody “Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies” is one of the few Al Yankovic songs in which Al’s long-time lead guitarist, Jim West, does not play lead guitar.

LYRICS
I want my, I want my MTV
I want my, I want my MTV
I want my, I want my MTV
I want my, I want my MTV
Now look at them yo-yo′s, that’s the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain′t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Money for nothin′ and your chicks for free
Now that ain′t workin’ that′s the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain’t dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb
We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TV′s
See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy that’s his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he′s a millionaire
We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TV’s
(Move-a, move-a… uh)
(We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries)
We gotta move these refrigerators
(We gotta move these color TV’s)
Look here, look here
I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin′ in the camera
Oh, man we could have some fun
And he′s up there, what’s that? Hawaiian noises?
He′s bangin’ on the bongos like a chimpanzee
Oh, that ain′t workin’ that′s the way you do it
Get your money for nothin’ and your chicks for free
We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TV’s
Listen here
Now, that ain′t workin′ that’s the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain′t workin’ that′s the way you do it
Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free
Money for nothin′, chicks for free
Get your money for nothin’ and your chicks for free
Money for nothin’, chicks for free
Money for nothin′, chicks for free
Money for nothin′, chicks for free
Get your money for nothin’, get your chicks for free (Ow, yeah)
Get your money for nothin′ and your chicks for free (What’s that?)
Get your money for nothin′ and your chicks for free (Look at that, look at that)
Get your money for nothin’ and your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV) (Bozos)
Money for nothin′ and your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV)
Get your money for nothin’ and your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV)
Ow, money for nothin’ and your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV)
(Easy easy money) money for nothin′, (Easy easy chicks) chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV)
(Easy easy) money for nothin′, your chicks for free (I want my, I want my, I want my MTV)
(That ain’t workin′)
Money for nothin’, chicks for free
Money for nothin′

LYRICS
Beverly
Beverly Hillbillies
Huh, now lookie here, people
Listen to my story
A little story ’bout a man named Jed
You know something, that poor mountaineer
They say he barely kept his family fed
Now, let me tell you, one day he was shootin’
Old Jed was shootin’ at some food
When all of a sudden right up from the ground, there
Well, there came a bubblin’ crude
Oil that is, well, maybe you call it
Black gold or Texas tea
He gonna move next to Mr. Drysdale
And be a Beverly Hillbilly
Before you know it, all the kinfolk are a-sayin’
Yeah, buddy, move away from there
That little Clampett got his own cement pond
That little Clampett, he’s a millionaire
Now, everyone said Californie
Is the place that you oughta be
We got to load up this here truck now
We got to move to Beverly
Hills, that is
Swimming pools
Move-a-move-a-movie stars
Huh
Look at that, look at that
Beverly, Beverly, Beverly Hillbillies
Y’all come back now, hear?
Beverly, Beverly, Beverly Hillbillies
Beverly, Beverly, Beverly Hillbillies
Beverly, Beverly, Beverly Hillbillies

I almost blew my roof off paying Dire Straits just now! Then I played the Weird One’s version expecting to be slightly disappointed, but I wasn’t – it’s great!

I hope your neighbors were equally entertained! Thanks, dear Keith.

I have seen this one several times and it is always enjoyable because I am able to relate to the song and the TV show. It is very clever, and I think this was one that came easy for Weird Al where he got Money For Nothing.

This is another great one which I featured last year on Glyn’s Mixed Music Bag. It’s classic Al and classic Dire Straits. I think we all remember the original DS version from MTV, too. I know I do! Thanks, Jim.
