THE KINKS – The Davies brothers, Ray and Dave, were born in suburban North London, the youngest and the only boys among their family’s eight children. At home, the brothers were immersed in a world of varied musical styles, from the music hall of their parents’ generation to the jazz and early R&R their older sisters enjoyed. Both Ray and his brother Dave, younger by almost three years, learned to play guitar, playing skiffle and R&R together. While in school, the brothers formed a band called the Ray Davies Quartet. Their debut at a school dance was well received, which encouraged the group to play at local pubs and bars. The band went through a series of lead vocalists, including schoolmate Rod Stewart, who performed with the group at least once in early 1962. He then formed his own group, Rod Stewart and the Moonrakers, who became a local rival to the Ray Davies Quartet. While at college, Ray Davies came in contact with the Soho-based Dave Hunt Band, a professional group of musicians who played jazz and R&B. On New Year’s Eve 1962 at the Lyceum Ballroom, Davies joined the Dave Hunt Band which briefly included Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones on drums. Dressed in red huntsman’s jackets and sporting mud haircuts, brothers Ray and Dave Davies were launched on the British public as an image-heavy beat band. Their first couple of attempts fell flat but the rough, impulsive “You Really Got Me” was something quite different. Close in form to the Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie”, it had an R&B edge British audiences were looking for. Songwriter Ray Davies said that he had been inspired to write the song one night during his college days playing with the Dave Hunt Band, when he saw an attractive girl on the dance floor. He said: “When we finished, I went off to find her, but she was gone and never returned to the club. She really got me going.”

  1. Jim Morrison’s “Hello, I Love You” was accused of borrowing a riff from the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night”. When Ray Davies confronted him about this, Jim said, “You really got me.”

    1. What a thrill that must have been for Kinks fans! This little band has always been one of our faves and we’ve seen them perform at least 10 times! Thanks for the memories, Willow; happy to provide some great music for you today.
