In “Gump”, one of Weird Al’s shortest songs, he parodies “Lump” by The Presidents of the United States. Obviously, the song is about Forrest Gump. You’ll remember the movie starred Tom Hanks; in the parody, Forrest is played by Andy Comeau. Some of the strangers on the bench with Forrest Gump include Laugh In’s Ruth Buzzi and Pat Boone with an insane chocolate fetish.

“Lump” composer Chris Ballew said the lyrics combined his own history of having a benign tumor in his head with a vision he had of a woman in a swamp, while employing the word “lump” which he thinks is fun to say. Ballew considers “Lump” his favorite composition.

  5. Nancy, I love it! Though for a moment you had me confused since I couldn’t recall The Presidents of the United States being part of the soundtrack for “Forest Gump” – of course, that’s because they weren’t! 🙂

    “Lump” is a fun song, btw, which I’m not sure I had heard before. Weird Al’s “Gump” is just brilliant. Andy Comeau had a striking resemblance to Tom Hanks, especially when watching that clip on my small laptop monitor without glasses! 🙂

    1. Glad to introduce a new song to you, Christian. I thought “Lump” was a rather silly song and Al’s version was much better. You’re right about Andy Comeau; he looked a lot like Hanks in that video. This is my third month doing Al videos and I’m still having a great time! Thanks for being part of the weirdness!
