Written for dVerse Poetics –
“From Your Valentine”. Here is
my poem, in the form of a letter.

Dear friends, please heed my tale of woe
For this is something you all should know
I suffered much in dreadful pain
My loss will now be your gain
He slipped into my bed at night
Bony fingers held me tight
I dared not look into his eyes
Teeth clenched, I muffled all my cries
He held me close, so very tight
My mind screamed out for me to fight
I felt a tightness in my chest
He whispered in my ear to rest
A searing pain between my thighs
Salty tears fell from my eyes
I cannot bear this pain much longer
I prayed to the gods to make me stronger
What did I do to deserve this fate?
Perhaps it was something that I ate
The chocolate box on the floor did lay
Why did I eat them all in one day?
I wanted just a taste, one bite
But I ate and ate to my heart’s delight
Now my stomach lining’s on fire
So much for following my heart’s desire!
If these words, my friends, ring true
Let this be a warning to you
If you suffer from IBS*
Just say “no” instead of “yes”
*Apologies to those afflicted. No disrespect intended. It’s all about the rhyme! 😫

I can’t imagine life without chocolate. The bigger the box the better!

Clever twist, writer Nancy! Surprising us with a box of chocolate versus an evil culprit. 🫢 Thoughtful of you to apologize. I dealt with this as an overstressed teacher, worsened by my dad’s illness. Personally, I think humor helps us cope with our human frailties and of course it’s not your lack of compassion, it’s the fault of the rhyme, forever needing recognition 👍🏻

Thank you for acknowledging my PSA, Michele. One of my dear friends here on WordPress is afflicted with IBS; I had her in mind when I wrote that little apology. It doesn’t take much to ensure someone’s feelings are not hurt. It’s just not worth it.
I’m pleased to know you enjoyed my poem. Thank you! ☺️

You’re very welcome and sorry to read of your friend dealing with IBS. It does make life more challenging and amplifies stressful situations. I also appreciate your note about not hurting another’s feelings. 🙏🏻

You led us in one direction and then cleverly turned the poem Nancy – wryly done…

This is incredibly poignant ~ I am glad you chose to share with us the many woes of IBS! Especially resonate with;
“I wanted just a taste, one bite
But I ate and ate to my heart’s delight
Now my stomach lining’s on fire
So much for following my heart’s desire!”
Wishing you happy valentine’s day (in advance) 🥰 Thank you so much for writing to the prompt, Nancy 🩷🩷

My great pleasure! I guess one might consider this a PSA about the perils of eating too much of anything! Thank you very much, Sanaa.

This was hilarious, and absolutely not what I was expecting at all! 😆 great job, Nancy 👏 👏 hopefully no one is offended, I know plenty of IBS sufferers and I’ve had bouts of colitis, so hey, it is what it is and it’s too true! 😂 Well done, on point as usual! ✨ 💕

Thanks so much, Laura! ☺️
We all have episodes from time to time but I know people who suffer constantly from IBS; I wanted to be clear I wasn’t making fun of them.
I can’t digest certain nuts…..something I discovered the hard way years ago after my mister gave me a box of chocolate covered coconut and nuts for Valentine’s Day. I ate too many and ended up like my MC. Never again!! 😳
Glad to know the humor came through and you appreciated my funny story. 😎

It’s good to know I am not the only one on the untrustworthy side of a box of chocolates.

Fortunately, I am not afflicted thusly so nothing stands between me and a box of chocolates.

Even without IBS, there is always something that it’s too much of the good.
