Dear Old Sun

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured February artist and her song.

Time to go back to the country and revisit the sweet and sassy voice of my favorite country singer, Miranda Lambert, and her song “Dear Old Sun”. I love how the guitar’s crisp sharp twang cuts through the icy chill of February, replicating Miranda’s voice to unexpected perfection.

One year after a very public divorce from Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert got the last word with her 2016 album, The Weight of These Wings, a double disc magnus opus that tackles breakups, booze, friendships, fetishes, old scars and new beginnings over the course of 24 songs.

The Weight of These Wings debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and #3 on the all-genre US Billboard 200 chart; it has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In addition, The Weight of These Wings won Album of the Year at the 2017 AMC Awards.

Miranda Lambert isn’t chasing success here; she’s chasing the muse. The result is a pure, pointed look at heartbreak and reconstruction, delivered by a writer who’s at the top of her game. In “Dear Old Sun”, Miranda sends a prayer skyward, mixing Southern soul and country-gospel into a stunning love song to the sun.

LYRICS

Dear old sun
How you holding up
Through the winter cold
Up there all alone
February‘s been hard on a heart
But we’re near the end
And it’s almost March
Though the sky’s been grey
And in our way I still see your light

Well, you melt the snow
And you grow the roses
And you dry the tears
And you freckle noses
Our little world
Revolves around
You coming up and going down

Dear old sun
Let’s call it a day
And I watch you set
I’ll let you rest
But wait for you
At mornings due
Till I see your light

I still see your light
I still see your light
Heaven shining down tonight
I still see your light

I still see your light
I still see your light
Heaven shining down tonight
I still see your light

Oh Oh Oh

    1. Back in 2004 when I was recovering from surgery, my husband and I found ourselves immersed in Country Music. Miranda Lambert was my favorite country artist then and she still is today. I’m pleased to know you liked this one, Mangus. Thanks for stopping by for a look and a listen.
