As I was walking about the other morning, I came across a groundhog. I’d completely forgotten it was Groundhog Day and I fear I may have insulted the little fellow by asking “What’s the story, pal….same old, same old?” He looked up at me from his phone, his two little beady eyes staring angrily, and replied,“Have you been unconscious or something? Why, everybody knows. Six more weeks of winter. Six more weeks of billowy snows! Now, go away, you nosy human! I’ve got hate mail and it really blows!” And with that he huffed and puffed and wriggled back into his nice warm hole. Poor old guy; sure hope he’s gonna be ok.

a great chill lingers
look up to the sky with hope
waiting for the spring

  1. Good one! When I lived in Cinci Ohio, there was a small creek behind the condo. A family of Groundhogs had a burrow under a fallen tree. I would sit on the patio, and they would scurry about doing what they do. After a while, they became curious and approached me, of course I fed the apples and carrots and a hot dog once in a while. Glad you found one that could talk.

      1. We have Prairie Dogs in Texas. Cute little guys, dig holes everywhere and can bite like a gator with those sharp teeth. Parts of the Big Bend desert mountains are crawling with their unincorporated towns.
