All Is Calm

Written for Ovi Poetry Challenge #80.
This week’s inspiration word is
“treasure”. This is my Ovi.

Turn off the Noël carols
Pack up the festive towels
Evergreen garlands and laurels
Christmastime is over

Say goodbye to the hustle
Bid adieu to the bustle
Ciao wrapping paper rustle
Hear the peaceful quiet

Take down the decorations
Poinsettias and carnations
The end of school vacations
Returning to the norm

Box up the Christmas tree
The holly and the ivy
The Lenox nativity
It’s another year’s end

File away the Christmas cards
The giant Santa in the yard
Grandpa’s video of Die Hard
Bring it to the attic

Ornaments get put away
Manger, shepherds and the hay
Save for another Christmas day
Quiet jingle bells

Children’s toys are out of sight
Unplug the bright and twinkling light
It’s such a lovely silent night
All is still and calm

This is the time I treasure
Peaceful moments of pleasure
To enjoy at my leisure
At least until New Year’s Eve

      1. You’re right, Nancy, it’s difficult, but AAAb rhyming pattern looks so nice to write and read. If I’m not mistaken, ovis are folk songs having origin in India, especially Marathi language.

  6. Well said, and true. The anticipation starts around Thanksgiving, everyone is caught up in the ride. Christmas Eve bring the reverence expected, and then Christmas Day, around bedtime, brings the big letdown. We are still buzzing from the 30 days it took us to get here. Packing away the decorations bring a bit of sadness, but I’m ready. Climbing into the attic gets harder each year, I may hire a young person for that.

  7. It’s not over here until the 8th of January when the the Fat lady sings and the Chrissy decorations are taken down. I think it is a Catholic tradition here.
    Oh while we are on the topic of festivities, Nancy I would like to wish you and you and your family a very Happy New Year.

    1. It is indeed a Catholic tradition; Epiphany, when the 3 kings arrive at the manger. For us it’s when our son arrives at our house before going to work to drop off his little girl for babysitting; he’s the one who’s young and strong enough to carry all the decorations back into the attic! 😂

      1. You know I looked up the tradition and found the ‘Epiphany’ which fell on the 6th of January, so I wasn’t sure of the 8th significance. But thanks for clarifying. And it makes perfect sense since my kids said something about a day of the ‘magos’ (‘the magicians which I believe refers to the Kings). Funny how in one evangelical they are referred to as the Kings, yet in another as ‘Pastors’ unless I’m mistaken.

      Poetry writing is something new for me; I guess I started about a year ago. I had no idea how many different forms of poetry there are. I never even heard of an ovi, a tanka, a quadrille, etc. I was strictly a short story writer. Being on WordPress has allowed me to learn so many new things about writing and to meet wonderful people such as you.

      1. Girl, you and me both! 😆 I only recently started writing poetry in March. I haven’t even ventured out into the quadrilles and the tankas 🤣 I’m always so highly impressed when I see these, everyone who does them makes it look so easy! And that’s true too, the community is wonderful. 💗 It’s been a pleasure too getting to know you as well and seeing your poem also makes me want to branch out into different forms (eventually!) haha 😆 thank you, Nancy 🙏 your kindness is highly appreciated 😊
