Written for Gerry C & Sue W’s Weekly Prompts
Wednesday Challenge . The prompt word this
week is “socks” and this is my response.

It was American showman P.T. Barnum who said “There’s a sucker born every minute”. As crass as that may sound, I realized there’s truth in that statement.
It all started when I was looking online for Christmas gift ideas and came across a company called Little Miss Matched – a very clever takeoff on the word “mismatched”. This company sells nothing but socks and undies …. and they’re all mismatched.
“What an incredibly novel and fun idea!” I said to myself. Whoever was behind the notion of selling mismatched socks was a genius; after all, what young girl wouldn’t love making a fashion statement like that?
After checking out the website, I placed an order for 6 pairs of mismatched socks for my granddaughters. I was feeling quite proud of myself for having come up with such a cool and different gift for Christmas! The girls would love them!
Later that day as I was putting away my freshly washed laundry, I groaned at the large basket full of socks, each one waiting to be matched with its mate. What a thankless job! As I stood there sorting through dozens of socks and neatly rolling pair after pair, it suddenly hit me.
What a numbskull I was! Why on earth did I just spend $72 on mismatched socks for my granddaughters when all they had to do was grab any two socks from their drawer? Instant mismatched socks at no extra cost! And guess what. We all have them!
Yep, P.T. Barnum was right!

We’re still on our Christmas break and haven’t published a challenge since our Ghost challenge on the 14th of December. I logged on today to check that there were no late entries for ‘Ghost’, and I was surprised to find three responses to the Sock Challenge published in August 2023! Now, I’m intrigued as to how you all found it!

Seriously?? That’s very strange, Sue! I got an email just like I always do when you post a new challenge. If you click on the name of your challenge (located at the top of my page under the title of my story), it should take you right to it.
This is hilarious; I’m surprised you only got three responses!

The site shows the last published item as the 14th December! How very odd. Anyway, I liked your response 😀

Haha. Does it make me a terrible person that I laughed at this! Pairing up mismatched socks can be a true pain in the neck while sorting out laundry. It’s even worse if one half goes missing!

No! Not at all! I was hoping people would laugh. It really is a ridiculous concept when you think about it.
Thanks, Shweta!

I laughed a lot 😀
Yes, it is a ridiculous concept but they manage to market it so well, I guess.

It’s all in the marketing; people will buy anything if presented in a way they can’t resist! 😊

My 30-year-old son makes a point of mismatching his socks. Fashion statement bc necessity! 😂

My point exactly! And I bet he didn’t drop $72 first! 😂

So funny! The 12-year-old granddaughter usually likes mismatched socks, so I don’t bother matching them up any longer!

I’m thinking of all the time I spent matching socks and knowing that I’ll never get those precious hours back …. along with my $72! 🤦🏼♀️

Hahah. Yes, mismatched socks is the style I adopt around the house when all I have clean are the ones that returned from the laundry without a mate.

That’s another mystery in the life cycle of socks! Go figure. 🤷🏼♀️
