Around 7:00 PM Thursday evening, we received a phone call from my neighbor and best friend of 40+ years; Lucy was on her deck! My friend, Debby, told us she had just stepped outside to fire up the grill when she spied Lucy huddled up under the barbecue cover. We were so relieved and went right over to get our girl!
As I mentioned in my previous post, Lucy is a big scaredy cat; noises and groups of unfamiliar people frighten her and she’ll go into hiding … usually under a pile of pillows on our bed.
We brought Lucy to our back deck so we could clean her up and check for ticks before letting her inside the house. She looked great and we saw no cuts, ticks or bugs of any kind on her. As soon as we put Lucy down on the floor, we knew something was wrong as she had a pronounced limp in her back right leg. Other than that, she looked good … incredibly good for an indoor cat who had been out in the elements for more than 36 hours.
Lucy likes to sit outside on our deck sunning herself and enjoying the fresh air; there’s a 3′ tall fence around the whole deck and a gate at the top of the stairs which is always closed. Lucy has never left the deck to go wandering … except for Wednesday when she must has spotted something in the backyard worth chasing. I’m sure it was the jump off the deck which caused her injury.
I have a suspicion Lucy never got very far after her jump … just far enough away from the house to be disoriented and afraid of all the strange noises around her. She probably found herself a hiding spot and just hunkered down. I’m sure she didn’t feel comfortable moving around on her injured leg, either. At some point she felt brave enough to work her way over to Debby’s house and hide out under her barbecue cover. We live right next door to Debby so it’s a mystery why Lucy didn’t just walk straight to our house … especially since we had put out her food and favorite blanket and Bill & I were out on the deck fairly often Wednesday and Thursday calling for her. Lucy isn’t much of a conversationalist so that question wil remain unanswered.
We are so relieved to have Lucy home! She was starving, very thirsty and exhausted after her adventure. She’s been asleep ever since returning; tomorrow we will bring her to the vet for an examination. Hopefully her injury will turn out to be small. Thanks to all of you for your good wishes; they made a worrisome day tolerable for us.
~ Nancy
I had a feeling she hadn’t gone far. We had an escapee a few years ago, and it was pretty much the same thing…

Your gut was right, John. Lucy is such a scaredy cat! She must have been traumatized, poor thing. She’s doing really well now but showing no signs of wanting to go outside. Fine by me!

So glad she’s home. Maybe she stunned herself when she jumped/her leg gave out and that’s why she went to your neighbour’s house as she was a little disoriented. Lots of fuss and TLC

It’s as good a scenario as any, Di. Only Lucy knows what happened and she’s not talking! 😹
Thanks for your good wishes!

I’ve been a pet owner for many years, so I think I get it. 🙂
My dear wife is crazy about pets, and at one point, we owned five feral cats, two dogs, two bunnies and an aquarium full of guppies.
Currently, we’re down to two of the cats, which we found on our property as abandoned babies and took them in. We also still have fish! 🙂

Yep. Sounds about right. We also had 5 cats at one time and two parakeets, Wally and The Beaver. At this point in our lives, Lucy will likely be our last pet. That’s fine; we brought a lot of pets into our home and they in turn brought a lot of love. ♡

Poor kitty! Glad she’s back in the family fold, and with any luck it’s just a sprain. With all that, she seems to know how to tale care of herself, and learn to watch birdies from a distance. 🐦 🐅

Just a sprain which will heal on its own. 🤩
Lucy is resting a lot but she is now able to go up and down the stairs to her litter box in the basement. That’s a relief, not only for her physical health but also because we brought a small litter box upstairs when she was unable to use the stairs and I’m very glad it’s now gone! 😷

Great news! I hope she’s only got a wee sprain or something that simple rest will put right.
They are such a worry when they don’t appear on time! Our two will invariably appear when I whistle for them at 10:30 each evening. But we live next to woodland and there’s lots of distractions to be found, so sometimes I’ll be checking the garden several times for a couple of hours! (This only very occasional, which means it’s more worrying.)
It’s lovely to see how close they are though. If one turns up without the other, they will pace up and down the patio looking for their sister. 🙂

What at sweet story, Cee Tee. After years and years of living with cats, we’ve come to know them very well and have experienced just about every situation. Hard to believe Lucy is the first one to go MIA!
After sleeping all night, this morning she’s walking much better. I believe the vet will write off on her as a simple sprain, as you said.
I didn’t enjoy that extended feeling of helplessness and hope not to repeat in any time soon! Thanks for your good wishes. 😊
