Written for Friday Fictioneers where our host Rochelle
has asked us to use the photo below as inspiration
and get creative in 100 words or less, while making
every word count. Here’s my flash.

Imagine if you will a girl, her dog and three hapless friends searching for a wizard to grant their deepest wishes.
People love scrappy little pups. But what if the dog was a mangy seagull with a caw like a rusty fan belt? What if his wish was to crow like a mighty rooster, to wake the townspeople with his majestic “cock-a-doodle-doo“?
The wise and benevolent wizard could not fulfill such hopes but his reassuring message was that everyone’s wishes would come true if only they dared to dream.
I do believe that gull with lofty ambitions dared to dream..

It’s such a great movie. My parents went to the 1939 premier before leaving for their honeymoon. So glad you enjoyed my story.

Toto was a bit ornery and happy. That seagull could get close to its dreams, maybe it can’t crow like a rooster, but it squawks like a seagull at dawn it’s Sure to wake everyone up. That’s pretty darn close.

Haha! You make an excellent point! Gulls can be heard a mile away! 🪿

Dear Nancy,
There’s a Yiddish expression, “If my grandfather was a woman, he’d be my grandmother.” Cute take on the prompt and the Wizard of Oz. 😉

Excellent expression, Rochelle! Thanks … that gave me a smile.
WoZ is on my list of top 5 movies; I’m thrilled to know you enjoyed my little homage.

I’m not sure the film would have had quite the same magnetism with a seagull but maybe I just don’t have enough imagination. Good take.

No, it would definitely be lacking the warm puppy fuzzies and the seagull’s name would have to be changed to Tito!
Thanks, Sandra.

If he crowed like a rooster, how would be attract a mate? Just being technical here 🙂 Your story is certainly food for thought.

Everyone needs a dream. I wonder does anyone dream to be a seagull and fly around the world, a life on the roaring seas. The seagulls I have encountered seem to dream of new tactics in snatching food from unsuspecting snackers along the promenade.

We’ve been hanging out with the same seagulls, James! The tough-looking ones always crack me up; they remind me of Edward G. Robinson, sans cigar!
I hope in my next life I come back as a bird. Soaring high above the earth must be an incredible feeling.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, James.

Be an Eagle and not a seagull.

Nancy, I love where the image took you. That little critter was central to it all, and he dreamed as big as the sky.

Thanks so much, Lisa. As the sweet song goes …
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true
Sometimes you just gotta believe. 🌟

I’ve noticed my dog barks at the seagulls on my roof often. I wonder if he’d like to be one?

Sneaky wizard. Now, when it doesn’t come true, he can always say it was because the gull didn’t truly want it enough

If I recall the movie correctly, the wizard cheaped off in the end and handed out a diploma, a heart necklace and a medal. I would have been royally pissed off. So much for granting wishes.

Lol! It is indeed, and though I realize that there are seldom happy endings in real life, I still want my stories and movies to end on a positive note.
