Welcome to Birthday Thursdays! Each week I will feature someone from the world of music whose birthday falls on this day. There won’t be any chit chat from me, no facts and figures – just some great tunes (and an occasional surprise). Check it out right here every Thursday and enjoy the music.

Happy Birthday to Engelbert Humperdink

I was never a fan of his. However, the opera Hansel and Gretal by the original Engelbert Humperdinck is one of my favourites!

That is a lovely piece, no doubt!
I remember some critics called Engelbert “the poor man’s Tom Jones”.

Here’s a guy history has more or less forgotten. Good picks!

Tell him that! 😊
I think he’s quite happy at the age of 88 with his place in the music history books and to be giving his final tour in July 2024! 😎

This probably won’t come as a surprise but I absolutely hated him. Mum music!

Well, as my Dad always said, “Sauseech his own!”

I wonder if he would have been as successful if he’d stayed as Arnold Dorsey. Give me the music of the guy whose name he stole any day!

Too funny, Marc included Englebert (and one of his songs) on a recent post. We then discussed how wonderful this singer is.
My parents had an 8-track player and we Englebert, Fiddler on the Roof and Tom Jones. (The things we remember!)

There was always a friendly rivalry between Engelbert and Tom, both fantastic singers!
Fiddler was a favorite in our house, too. Such a rich soundtrack steeped in Tradition!

Of course. They are both so different. I love ’em both.

Fiddler – so funny because I knew all the songs before ever seeing the movie! LOL.

We think alike, my friend! I almost posted that song. Good move!
I was just reading that their rivalry didn’t stay friendly for long and they’ve been feuding for 40 years! Boys will be boys!

Haha! Goes to show.
And honestly, what is there to fight about? They are both wonderful singers (Engelbert – 88 – looks fab compared to Tom – 83.) Those lips on Mr. Humperdinck and the hips on Mr. Jones! 😀

Absolutely! That name change was a great move. I always liked his voice.

I had a friend who once said, “If that was my name…I’d change it!”. He couldn’t believe it when I told him that WAS the name he changed it to!

I liked Blue Spanish Eyes. I liked him. Simple sound … easy to sing along with. Easy listening.

He’s charming; my Dad always preferred him over Tom Jones, saying ‘he‘s smooth around the edges.‘
