Feb Fab Faux Four #27

WARNING: THIS BLOG WAS NOT CREATED FOR BEATLEMANIACS!
If you’re on the fence about the Beatles or if you just don’t like them,
this blog is for you. My goal is not to convert you; it’s to expose you
to the lesser-known Beatles songs we don’t hear day in and day out.

These great tunes will show you just how amazing the Beatles are.
Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, pull up a chair and enjoy the tunes!

Welcome back to Feb Fab Faux Four. We’re down to the final three days of the month; after this, I won’t be allowed to play another Beatles song until summer!

This next song is clearly about a guy begging for his woman not to leave him. It’s a real belter, with a hard and heavy Louisiana-style blues/rock sound.

Paul says he remembers ā€œwanting to get the vocal right, wanting to get it good; it’s hard on the voice and if it comes off even a little bit lukewarm, then you’ve missed the whole point.ā€œ

John said ā€œPaul wrote it, so what the hell, he’s going to sing it. If he’d had any sense, he should have let me sing it.ā€

Haha! I happen to like this song a lot and think Paul did a fine job on it. Let’s see what you think of my cover choice; as usual, the original will play first.

From the Beatles, this is “Oh! Darlingā€

🪲

With his rendition of ā€œOh! Darlingā€, this is Graham Bonnet

Oh, sweet baby Jesus! This is how to do a cover! You stick to the basics, changing it up just enough to make it your own without tearing the hell out of it and making it unrecognizable.

I’ve always loved the gritty, down & dirty sound of the blues; ā€œOh! Darlingā€ is a perfect example of that style of song. Graham Bonnet, front man for such hard rock and heavy metal bands as Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group and Alcatrazz was born to sing a song like this.

I adore Graham Bonnet. He’s got one of the best voices in rock, hard rock and metal. And since today is my birthday, Graham Bonnet singing “Oh! Darling” is my gift to me!

Talk about hitting all the right notes. My vote goes to Graham Bonnet.

Two more days after this; stop by again tomorrow.

See you on the flip side. šŸ˜Ž

PS – If any video won’t play for you, I’ve provided the name of the song and who did it so you can find it on YouTube. It’s a pain in the ass but it does happen from time to time. My apologies.

  1. Easy Graham Bonnet has my vote because he owns this song!

Credit to Macca for writing it but I was never keen on his voice ….which is now long gone and what John Lennon said was just testimony to his swollen ego …..runs out the door ducking the rotten tomatoes šŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ˜”

  2. Alrighty. It’s already late, but I’m wishing you happy birthday again, anyhow.

Here’s a shocker. I had no idea who Graham Bonnet was but he NAILED this tune. Perfect voice for it!

              1. Neither have I. I got locked out of my original page because I set up my authentication using my land line. Apparently, their genius computers don’t realize they are texting a code to a landline. FB wanted a bank account number and my drivers license number to verify my identity, like I’d be so stupid to give them that!
So I set up a new page, but have only half heartedly worked on getting my friends back, and most think I’m a hacker because my original page is still there, only I can’t access it!

                1. That’s awful (and ridiculous). I’ve never heard of anything like that with FB. I cut back because there’s so much negativity and stuff I’m not interested in. I used to post my stories but not even my close friends cared enough to read them so why bother? I pop in every once in a while but I quickly realize not much has changed and I’m missing nothing.

  3. Who would have thought that the guy who gave us crap like Mull of Kintyre could write and sing something like this? I’ve liked Graham Bonnet since his days in the Marbles, and later his brief stay with Rainbow, so this is a close call for me. Having given it due thought, it’s…… a draw! Sorry!

      1. Thank you. I can breathe more easily now 🤣

Macca has a long list of songs that should have been strangled at birth, yet wrote some real gems. Not for nothing did the band call some of his output ā€˜Granny songs’ though.

  4. It takes guts to cover a Beatles song, and even more guts to cover it as straight as the original, and I give Graham Bonnet credit for trying, but I found 3:00-3:19 painful to listen to. There are some other covers of this song I like better. Maybe Paul’s voice was too “clean” for this kind of song, but Paul vs. Graham and I’m one vote for Paul.

    1. Thanks for pointing that out, Michael. I’ll have to listen to those 19 seconds (not that it’s going to make any difference in my vote 😁).

You’re right about having guts to do a cover like this. Obviously I’ve listened to a lot of covers this month; some never should have been made and others are jewels, like this one.

      Thanks for your comments today.

  5. I admit that I’m partial on this one. Abbey Road is my favorite Beatles album and I don’t think there’s a single track on that album that anyone could do any better than the Beatles. Well, except for Joe Cocker’s cover of ā€œShe Came In Through the Bathroom Window.ā€ He fuckin’ nailed it. Other than that, though….

I digress. Graham Bonnet’s cover is excellent. But my brain is telling me that Paul’s rendition is nothing less than perfect. I’m going with the original on this song.

Maybe if Joe Cocker did the cover…
