WARNING: THIS BLOG WAS NOT CREATED FOR BEATLEMANIACS!
If you’re on the fence about the Beatles or if you just don’t like them,
this blog is for you. My goal is not to convert you; it’s to expose you
to the lesser-known Beatles songs we don’t hear day in and day out.
These great tunes will show you just how amazing the Beatles are.
Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, pull up a chair and enjoy the tunes!

Welcome back to the Feb Fab Faux Four. This song is surrounded by mystery, skepticism and a lot of a disappointment.
The story goes that John Lennon wrote this song about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles’ Indian guru. The group took an interest in Transcendental Meditation after attending one of Maharishi’s lectures. They went to India to study TM specifically at his camp, but left early when they began to fear he was more of a cult leader than an enlightened being. Speculation was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was using his status to seduce women.
Controversy among the Beatles lies in whether they all believed the stories or if John was seeing and believing things that weren’t really happening. Sadly, there’s no one who will tell the real story. John and George are dead, Ringo’s all about peace and love and Paul’s all about Paul.
There are many people who believe there are strange events surrounding the Beatles, including the conspiracy theory that the original Paul was killed in a car crash in 1966 and was replaced by a look-alike named William Shears Campbell (who also happened to be extremely talented!) Supposedly, they were sworn to secrecy. Who knows …. maybe when there’s only one man standing will some of the truths be revealed, but I doubt it.
Lennon called today’s song “Maharishi,” but changed the title to “Sexy Sadie” to keep from getting sued. The opening lines make Lennon’s sentiments perfectly clear.
This is “Sexy Sadie” by the Beatles.

Doing his cover of “Sexy Sadie” this is Paul Weller
Paul Weller achieved fame with the new wave band, the Jam then had further success with the blue-eyed soul sound of the Style Council before setting out on a solo career.
I think he did a fine cover of Sexy Sadie, keeping very true to the original, but his remake lacked the finesse and subtlety of John’s. My vote goes to the Beatles.
We’re going in the opposite direction tomorrow; come join me.
See you on the flip side. 😎

PS – If any video won’t play for you, I’ve provided the name of the song and who did it so you can find it on YouTube. It’s a pain in the ass but it does happen from time to time. My apologies.

I love the songs title! A good title for a song in my opinion! X

‘…Ringo’s all about peace and love and Paul’s all about Paul’, how true is that? As for the song, I doubt I need to say which I prefer!

The Beatles played on that conspiracy theory – remember the name of the singer in Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band?
As for this cover, it’s another in the ‘why bother’ category for me. It isn’t the best song the Beatles ever recorded and the cover adds nothing to it.

Sure ….. Billy Shears.
Yes, this cover is rather ho hum.

And then they segued into a song sung by…Ringo. I think they were enjoying themselves.
Hard to see what someone could do with a cover of this one, tbh 😊

I have to agree with you on this one. The Beatles win!

Paul Weller is a big Beatles fan and as well as Sexy Sadie, his other Beatles/John Lennon covers are: Don’t Let Me Down, Come Together, Blackbird (with Damon Albarn of Blur) and Instant Karma.

I’m a fan of both and I’ve seen Paul Weller live with The Jam and a few times as a solo artist. So I can’t really chose here.

Paul Weller did a really good job; there are some touches that John incorporates that stole this one away from Weller.

Good to know, Glyn, in case I ever need another Beatles cover.

I remember being convinced that Paul was dead when all that was brewing, had all the evidence and was presenting it to my father and he laughed and asked me if I really thought all those hundreds of people, relatives, friends, colleagues would keep a secret that big? And why would they?

Your father makes a good point.
I have seen scores of videos and read volumes on this subject. One video in particular stayed with me. It’s a celebration, perhaps George’s wedding to Olivia (but don’t quote me on that). Paul and Linda arrive; Ringo and George and their wives are already there, perhaps John is there as well …. I’m not sure about that …. and everyone is calling Paul “Billy” as in “Billy Shears”, the name of the guy who supposedly took Paul’s place after he died. It’s eye-opening; why would they be calling him Billy? The video has the look of a home movie; who made the recording, I don’t know. Maybe they were joking around by calling him “Billy”.
But we must bear in mind that any video can be doctored, any photo can be photoshopped and any conspiracy theory made believable if presented in a professional and convincing way.
To that end, who knows what’s true about anything?
This is a different video, not the one I mentioned above. It’s a quick vid behind the scenes at Concert for George:

The Hello Billy thing is wild. Of course, the rational part of my brain says to just compare voice prints before and after?
