WARNING: THIS BLOG WAS NOT CREATED FOR BEATLEMANIACS!
If you’re on the fence about the Beatles or if you just don’t like them,
this blog is for you. My goal is not to convert you; it’s to expose you
to the lesser-known Beatles songs we don’t hear day in and day out.
These great tunes will show you just how amazing the Beatles are.
Of course, if you are a Beatles fan, pull up a chair and enjoy the tunes!

Welcome back to F4. We are now two days into the second half of the month.
Considering the edgy progressive complexity of today’s song, it’s amazingly difficult to believe it was released in 1963 and was composed primarily by two guys who could neither read nor write music. This little number takes us all over the place with notes and chords and harmonies we don’t expect and somehow, it all works.
It’s a classic.
Here are the Beatles with “Not A Second Time”
🪲
This is “Not A Second Time” as done by the Pretenders
It seems only right that this progressive, edgy and complex piece be covered by the Pretenders and their legendary front-woman Chrissie Hynde; they are, after all, the icons of punk and New Wave music.
This is a really good cover; it stayed true to the original with a good electric piano break but I expected a little more from this group which has always been on the cutting edge.
This one goes to the Beatles.
Join me tomorrow for a cool tune off the White Album.
See you on the flip side. 😎

PS – If any video won’t play for you, I’ve provided the name of the song and who did it so you can find it on YouTube. It’s a pain in the ass but it does happen from time to time. My apologies.

Either/or for me. I think if you are a fan of one more than the other (group, I mean), the vote will go that way 🙂

I’d say that’s the way it usually goes unless one of the songs really sucks! 😂

Of course. But in the case where you are not a fan of either but appreciate each there versions… 😉

I was always a fan of Chrissie Hynde, but this cover wasn’t for me. I was thinking only the other day that The Pretenders would be the perfect name for a tribute band!

Haha! You’re right about the tribute band name!
I felt the same way about the Pretenders performance of this song. They could have just phoned it in.

I like The Pretenders but I never knew they did a cover of ‘Not a Second Time’. I like it.

Robert Palmer did a good cover, too.

I prefer the Pretenders version — very pop, so sweet to the ears — with Chrissie’s voice. But I’m a Pretenders fan, so extra nice to hear them play with a different-from-them sound.

I get ya, Liz! I’m a Pretenders fan, too.
I’m glad to see we’re getting people on both sides of the fence for this one!

Oh excuse me, the Pretenders put me to sleep. Better get some more coffee.

Hahaha!! They’re all pretenders, D!

I’m a fan of both bands, but you have to ask why The Pretenders recorded this. It’s a competent copy, but no more than that. The Beatles win it for me, by a distance.

When a group does a cover, perhaps they are paying homage or perhaps they think they can do it better.
I’ll let Oscar Wilde handle this one. Most people know only the first half of the quote; here it is in its entirety:
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.

They did, Ivor. My first choice was Robert Palmer, then I came across this one.
