BROKEN WINGS

Upon finding a dead sparrow in our yard,
my toddler granddaughter pleaded to
bring it back to life.

Her first real heartbreak.

Authors Note: If a person comes across a dead sparrow, it could mean the loss of freedom, innocence or something personal in one’s life. However, this loss could also indicate that a new beginning is coming for that person.

  1. so sad. I remember retrieving a great tit’s body from the road before it got squished, and did the same for a blackbird. It’s bad enough when they are hit by a car and die instantly, but to be run over again and again was upsetting to me, so I took them home and buried them in the garden.

    1. Yes, her first exposure to loss.
I found that symbolic meaning while looking for an image for my story; I thought people would find it interesting.
That song is so typical of the 80s sound and it was great to hear again. I look forward to doing these prompts every week, Sammi!

  2. I have a very special part in my heart for sparrows. For years they were my constant companion in my garden… there was a female that every time I had something to eat, she would come and go from the chair I was sitting until I get up and serve them their meal… You won’t ignore me, boy 😆.
And then the cats of the neighborhood made sure to drive them away… damn cats.

Rich symbolism in ancient myths for sparrows…. from soul bearers to symbols of divine care.

And so the little one entered for the first time the river of pain and loss…
