Crop Invaders: A Haibun
Written for Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge and

required words are “wrong” and “hoarding”. This is my haibun.

The exact year escapes me but it was a long time ago, to be sure. It was the summer we returned from vacation to find our tomatoes had ripened into gorgeous red orbs ready for eating. I could practically smell that grassy-green, spicy-sweet summery aroma. But something seemed wrong, off somehow. I felt like I was not alone in my garden, like I was being watched. Taking a closer look, I discovered disturbingly large caterpillars feasting on our lovely harvest. The bloated green creatures blended in so well with the underside of the leaves, it took a few seconds to register why our crop was full of gaping holes. Probing, boring, ravaging, gorging, hoarding. No tomato was salvaged that summer. Not one. That was the year I stopped planting tomatoes.

Blue Rhapsody: An Ovi Poem

Prompt of ‘feathery blues’. This is my ovi poem.

Gardening is my source of joy
I talk to plants and they act coy
But then sprout like a teenage boy
They’re the center of attention
I have some lovely blue heather
Blossoms airy like a feather
Changeable as the weather
From baby blue to electric
My plants don’t ask much of me
Tender care I give willingly
And the best part is it’s free
Just a little of my time
I would like to be a plant
One to delight and enchant
Like a painting by Rembrandt
Sitting on a piano.

Shovel Ready
This is a great post by our friend, Bluebird of Bitterness.

An old man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig up his garden and plant vegetables, but the ground was too hard. He sat down and wrote a letter to his son, who was in the state penitentiary.
Dear Fred,
It looks like I won’t be able to plant my garden this year. I’m too old to be digging up a garden plot. If only you were here, I know you’d dig the plot for me and all my troubles would be over.
Love,
Dad
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Whatever you do, don’t dig up that garden — that’s where I buried the bodies!
Love,
Fred
Early the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left.
The following day the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant your garden now. That was the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love,
Fred
Speaking of plants, this is a photo of one I picked up several weeks ago; it’s a type of philodendron called “Prince of Orange”:

And this is what it looks like now after a few weeks of water and sun; I just repotted into a larger pot; now I’m going to stand back and watch what happens. I’ve been thinking I should name it Audrey III!

It looks a bit prehistoric, doesn’t it? All that new reddish growth will unfurl into giant-sized leaves; if you look closely you can see some are already beginning to unfurl. This is one of the largest plants I have. Stay tuned for Audrey III’s growth over the next few weeks.
See you next time!
