1968: A Dectina Refrain
Written for dVerse Poetics: Fall (in) Love,
this is my Dectina Refrain.

I
met him
in the fall,
tanned from summer.
He was a bronzed god,
hair as gold as the sun,
eyes like burnished copper glowed.
He warmed the chill from out my bones,
thawed the late Autumn frost in my heart.
I met him in the fall tanned from summer.

My Baby’s Baby: A Dectina Refrain

It’s
really
amazing
how time flies by.
People say ‘don’t blink’;
where did fifteen years go?
She is my baby’s baby,
his first child and my first grandchild;
our world changed the instant she was born.
It’s really amazing how time flies by.
This is my beautiful granddaughter Mckenna; she’s funny and fun to be with. At one time she wanted to be a writer; now she’s hoping to become a professional musician in an orchestra. Her instrument of choice is the baritone sax … a powerhouse! She just finished her freshman year of high school and was accepted into the National Honor Society. She’s been a member of her school’s swim team for the last couple of years and today she will start her first job as a lifeguard for her town’s public pool. She really wanted that job and is psyched she passed the test. So are we! Congratulations, Mckenna! We’re so proud of you!

In Denial
Sammi at Weekend Writing Prompt has challenged us to write
creatively in exactly 60 words, incorporating the word ‘vapid’.
Using a few other prompt words, here is my 60-word response
in the form of a Dectina Refrain and a Haiku Duet.

Old
man with
vapid thoughts
and empty eyes
lives in denial;
puppeteers pulling strings
feeding hypnotic untruths
into flaccid, desolate brain
on the outskirts of insanity.
Old man with vapid thoughts and empty eyes
Gray, grayer smoke
above the clouds in the sky
no light shining brightly
Brown dying trees
dried leaves lay at the roots
no buds tacitly emerging

Worry
About me
I’ll be just fine
Better without you
Don’t write me an email
Don’t send me anymore texts
I don’t want you hanging around
Take your toothbrush out of my bathroom
Don’t worry about me I’ll be just fine

Bill: A Dectina
Yesterday’s prompt from Sadje
for Just Jot it January 2024.
Here’s my tardy but heartfelt reply.
☕️ 🥯

With
Humble
Gratitude
For my husband
Who, every morning,
Without hesitation,
Brings me my coffee in bed.
Sometimes he’ll bring a warm bagel.
I couldn’t ask for anything more!
With humble gratitude for my husband.

Tree
With gifts
For the kids
And Mom and Dad
Candles all aglow
Yule log in the fireplace
Festive lights brightly shining
Milk and cookies on the mantle
Decking the halls and jingling the bells
Tree with gifts for the kids and Mom and Dad

TOO MANY HATERS
David ben Alexander, The Skeptic’s Kaddish,
has inspired me to take a page from his book
and create my first Dectina Refrain Poem

You
looking
at us five?
We are unique.
How we worry you!
Why are you so afraid
when you don’t even know us?
Our five hearts are breaking for you,
consumed with hate, so unaccepting.
“You looking at us five? We are unique.”
