My Darling Edmond,

Your gift arrived this morning on a small silver tray, wrapped in tissue thin as a whisper. I held it up to the light …. that golden hairpin, its delicate foil catching the sun like something out of a dream …. and I felt my whole face bloom with a blush I couldn’t contain.

I wore it at once, safely secured into a thick bun in my hair.

There is often a hollow nostalgia in beautiful things; they make us ache for moments not yet lived. But this present carries only the warmth of your love for me.

It is not the gold itself, but the sentiment behind it …. that you saw it and thought of me. That simple smile of knowing. That is everything.

As I write this, my darling, the ivory sash of my robe has slipped away, revealing my quivering chest. My heart beats only for you and I ache to see you again.

Yours forever,

Mercedes
