Written for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt
where she asks us to get creative in exactly
94 words using the prompt word ‘abibliophobia’.
Here’s where the prompt took me.

Edgar raised his hand sheepishly. “My name is Edgar, and I suffer from abibliophobia.”

The group nodded with solemn understanding.

“It started small,” he continued. “One bookmark. Then three library cards. Now I can’t leave a bookshop without purchasing something. I reasoned I’d give the books as gifts, but I was lying to myself. Last Tuesday I bought a Croatian phrasebook. I don’t speak Croatian. I have no plans to visit Croatia.”

The facilitator leaned forward. “And how does running out of books make you feel?”

Edgar shuddered. “Like Croatia. Utterly foreign and terrifying.”
