The Dream

Here’s where the prompt took me.

She found him waiting where the walls met the ceiling met the floor, all of it the color of fresh snow. No shadows here, no corners sharp enough to catch on. Just endless white and the sound of his breathing.

“I’ve been dreaming of winter again,” she said.

He smiled, and she remembered that smile from somewhere …. a café, maybe, or a train platform in another life. “We’re always dreaming of winter. That’s how we find each other.”

She crossed the room, though there was no distance to cross, really. Space worked differently here. She was beside him, then against him, his warmth the only color in all that brightness.

“What if we don’t wake up this time?” she whispered.

“We always wake up,” he said, but his arms tightened around her anyway. “That’s the dream.”

  1. I am glad I woke up from my dream last night, because ants were crawling all over me. I loved your surreal story with the winter dream for the lovers, but I am still wondering the walls met the ceiling met the floor. I guess you described a place that is like a junction or a transition where the shadows run from themselves.
