So far…

So far 2026 isn’t going so well! This afternoon I slipped in the bathroom and fractured a rib. If you’ve ever suffered a fractured rib, you know how terribly painful it is. Now I’m home from the hospital, trying to get comfortable and going through my messages. I’ll get to yours eventually …. maybe.

  1. Older adults slip in the bathroom due to a combination of age-related physical changes (balance, strength, vision), medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease), medications causing dizziness, and hazardous environments like wet floors, poor lighting, and clutter, leading to common injuries like broken hips; prevention involves grab bars, non-slip mats, good lighting, shower chairs, removing rugs, and regular health checks.

    1. Thanks for that excellent PSA, Jim. For me, it was a case of socks slipping on bathroom tiles. My feet went out from under me and I fell, my side slamming into the toilet tank. I landed with full force. Fortunately, I did not hit the floor, I did not fall through the shower door, and I did not hit my head. All I suffered was a very painful fractured rib. For that, and the oxy I was prescribed, I am eternally grateful.

    1. This morning, when I was talking to my sister, she told me that she dreamt of me last night, that we were in our childhood home and I was about five years old. It was moving day and I was packing up all the boxes. She said it was hilarious to see a mini me lifting heavy boxes with ease. Let’s hope that was a good omen for 2026. Thank you, my dear friend. ❤️

    1. Thank goodness for small favors, eh! Fortunately, I did not hit the floor or my head or my wrist. I slammed my side on the toilet tank which broke my fall and I landed squarely on the toilet …. a rather ignoble situation but better there than the floor. Thanks for your good wishes, Jodi.

  2. Holy moly, Nancy. I cringed when I read this and thought, “I hope she didn’t land on her hand.” A fractured rib?! We never realize how much our body is all connected until we break something. I hope you heal quickly. ❤️

    1. So very true, Lois. Yes, my side came in contact with full force against the toilet tank. It wasn’t pretty, but it was impressive. Fortunately, my husband was home. If I’d been alone, I would probably still be in the bathroom. I appreciate your good wishes ❤️

  3. Oh! Nancy it never rains but it pours! I am so sorry to hear about this ….it’s so painful… If it’s not bad enough coping with Cista you now have this to cope with…. And it’s so painful. Sending you love and healing vibes 💜💜💜

    1. Thanks so much, Willow. Don’t even get me started. It’s been the perfect storm. Because of the tremendous number of flu and virus cases here, my physical therapist has been out sick and I have had exactly one therapy session. Being the holiday season, other therapists have been on vacation so sessions are few and far between. I had a session scheduled for today and before I fell, I got a call cancelling my session because of the same situation: one therapist down, another one away. It’s been ridiculous. Now this. I truly feel at the end of my rope. Trying to keep a good attitude; unfortunately even laughing hurts. Thanks sis 💜 💜

      1. if it helps … After I had got back on my feet and home from hospital the second time I broke my back.. I was being too clever…I am not saying you were but I decided to have a shower… hubby was out! Yes indeed how stupid am I.

long story short I had a dizzy spell and fell out of the bath… where the shower was at the time . .. Well I thought as I fell… Will I hit the sink , wall or radiator…either way I shall smash my head and die… Alone.

well I missed everything…. luckily thanks to the Titanium my back survived! .mmm needless to say hubby was not best pleaed. He had the bathroom removed and we now have a walk in shower room!!

Lets hope 2026 improves for you soon.

        Sending more healing vibes 💜💜💜

        1. Oh Lord! I am cringing with every word. Why do we do these things? Because we are independent women, and we hate the idea of being down and relying on someone for every little thing. I know I am just as guilty. Not this time. This was a total freak accident. I wasn’t in the middle of recuperation for back surgery like I was two years ago nor did I have any reason at all to feel like I was taking a chance. I’ve gotten up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and never thought about something like this happening. Accidents! Thank you for your words of wisdom, Willow. This time, I’m not doing anything. In fact, Bill left to pick up my meds and I haven’t moved from my recliner. 💜

    1. You are not kidding! You and I have been through a lot of the same shit and you know what this feels like right now. It’s a bitch and a half. Trying to keep my spirits up, but it’s hard. All the bad stuff keeps piling on. Thank goodness for Bill! Thanks for your good wishes, my friend.

  4. You’ve got all my sympathy, Nancy. After a month and a half in ortho rehab after my fall and fractured hip, I was glad to finally be home butI’m still paranoid about another loss of balance fall, I”ve put in handrails everywhere…

    Heal well

    1. Thanks, Ron. I appreciate your good thoughts. If the handrails give you that extra bit of confidence, then go for it. I broke my hip in 2008 and my recovery was an easy one, but that was 17 years ago and now every recuperation is a bitch. Good luck, brother!
